Stanley Blackburn: Welcome everyone to the HemisFair Arena in San Antonio, Texas! Tonight, the AWA presents to you, AWA Southwest Shootout live on pay per view! We have five action packed matches with the highest stakes possible. Strap on your cowboy boots, saddle those horses and remember the Alamo because we are going to have a shootout tonight!
Gorilla Monsoon: Here we go with the first match and arguably this is the match with the greatest stakes of all to open the show. We have a triangle tag team match pitting Ronnie and Jimmy Garvin against Rick Rude and Iceman Parsons as well as the team of Eddie Gilbert and Gino Hernandez. The man who loses the fall in this match will be gone from the AWA FOREVER! This is not a temporary ban, you will never ever see this wrestler again.
Gordon Solie: An added layer of intrigue in this match is the possible role that the women may play in this match. Lady Maxine, Precious and Missy Hyatt have all shown us over the past few weeks how much they dislike each other. That may all come to a head tonight.
Gordon Solie: This match is off and rolling as it will be tornado tag team rules with no tags needed and all six men in the ring. First fall wins it and the first fall ends the AWA career of one of these men. Jimmy Garvin immediately jumps on Eddie Gilbert which as far as we were concerned knew that this feud between the two was far from over, but it could all end tonight if they lose the fall and leave the AWA.
Gorilla Monsoon: The Garvins seem to be focusing on Eddie Gilbert and seem to be paying little attention to the Rude and Parsons duo. Eddie Gilbert has got to be the man that Jimmy Garvin would like to see gone from the AWA most and thus this had to be their game plan coming into the match was to soften him up.
Gordon Solie: Rude and Parsons have just taken advantage of the Garvins not paying attention to them by attacking from behind. Perhaps Rick Rude would most like to see Jimmy Garvin gone from the AWA. After all it was Garvin who sent both Rude and Gilbert packing for a 30 day long vacation which cost them plenty of paychecks along the way and took major money out of their pockets.
Gorilla Monsoon: The resiliency that we have seen from the Garvins over the past is shining bright here. They have turned the tide and are fighting back. Perhaps Jimmy would want to see Rude gone since it was Rude who was part of that love triangle involving Precious that caused Jimmy so much heart break and anguish before they finally reunited.
Gordon Solie: The Garvin duo has cleared the ring and that only leaves three in the ring. The Garvins and Eddie Gilbert, but I must say Gilbert is in a very sticky situation here as with one punch Ronnie Garvin could send Eddie Gilbert with his tail between his legs and his suitcases on both arms as he takes the bus back home to Tennessee.
Gorilla Monsoon: Eddie Gilbert after a slight distraction from his bodyguards, the Long Riders, has escaped to the safe haven of the outside to regroup with Bill and Scott Irwin.
Gordon Solie: He won’t be safe for long Gorilla as Ronnie Garvin comes flying off the top rope and takes out Gilbert and both of the Long Riders in one swoop. Talk about killing three birds with one stone!
Gorilla Monsoon: Eddie Gilbert is slowly getting to his feet but he won’t have even the slightest moment to rest after that Ronnie Garvin attack! Jimmy Garvin has grabbed him by the hair and is dragging him into the ring to hopefully finish off Hot Stuff and put an end to this once and for all!
Gordon Solie: Jimmy Garvin is looking to finish off Eddie Gilbert with a piledriver, but what is this? Missy Hyatt has jumped up on the ring apron and is distracting Jimmy Garvin by showing off her body.
Gorilla Monsoon: Precious refuses to be out done by Missy and has jumped on the apron to strut her stuff as well. It doesn’t look like Missy is taking too well to having some competition in the looks department!
Gorilla Monsoon: We have a ladies cat fight going on here at AWA Southwest Shootout! Missy and Precious are scratching and clawing away at each other as we have hair flying and broken nails littering the ring!
Gordon Solie: Jimmy Garvin is trying to get in between these two ladies to break it up, but if I was him I wouldn’t want to get in the middle of those two!
Gorilla Monsoon: A quick roll up by Eddie Gilbert! Earl Hebner has counted to three! You’ve got to be kidding me, Jimmy Garvin has lost the match at the hands of Eddie Gilbert!!!
Gordon Solie: What an unbelievable turn of events here for our first match at AWA Southwest Shootout. The ego of the two ladies overshadowed the match and Jimmy Garvin paid dearly for it. He seems to be almost inconsolable right now. Precious in essence has caused Jimmy Garvin his AWA career.
Eddie Gilbert: Na, na, na, na….na, na, na, na…..hey, hey, hey, goodbye! You’re out of here Garvin! Hit the road! Hot Stuff International will live on forever!
Gorilla Monsoon: Of all the things I have seen in my days of professional wrestling, this is right up there as one of the most shocking and disappointing moments I have ever witnessed. Jimmy Garvin had returned to the AWA and seemed primed and ready for a run at the AWA World Title, only to have his entire AWA career erased in the count of three seconds. Jimmy….we wish you the best in your endeavors, but we must say goodbye forever. We’ll be right back.
Gordon Solie: The bad blood really is flowing in this one. We have a six man tag team match where it’s no rules, everybody in the ring at the same time…the Fabulous Freebirds specialty match, the Freebird Rules match.
Gorilla Monsoon: Last month at AWA Superdome Spectacular we saw one of the most heinous attacks to ever happen in a AWA ring. The Freebirds took that Freebird Hair Cream and splattered it into the eyes of the patriarch of the Von Erich family, Fritz. This left the Von Erich sons distraught but most of all looking for revenge. They challenged the Freebirds to their own specialty match here tonight just to get them in the ring.
Gorilla Monsoon: The Von Erich boys are not messing around tonight! Before the bell even rung and even before the Freebirds could take their ring jackets off, the Von Erichs have attacked and are looking for revenge here in a swift way in the name of their father’s honor.
Gordon Solie: Looks like referee Jerry Calhoun is going to have a rough time trying to keep this match under control. This match is in the ring, on the apron and on the floor. These guys are going at it like cats and dogs
Gorilla Monsoon: Gordon, in the end, I don’t think Calhoun even needs to worry about controlling this match. With the no rules going on in this match, Calhoun’s only job is just to declare a winner of the bout.
Gorilla Monsoon: What a back and forth contest we are seeing. The Freebirds control one of the Von Erichs, the Von Erichs control one of the Freebirds. It’s like three separate battles going on in this one gigantic match. I don’t think I have ever seen a match like this, even when we have seen Freebirds Rules matches in the past they haven’t gotten this wild and crazy.
Gordon Solie: The Von Erichs are some of the most agile athletes I have ever seen in my days of professional wrestling. The youngest of the brothers, Mike, sends Terry Gordy down hard to the floor of the arena as he just leapt some 6 feet in the air to connect with Gordy’s head on a double knee smash to the face. What a leap!
Gorilla Monsoon: Kerry, Kevin and Mike have all gained control in this match and what a time to gain control! Look who just walked out from the curtain of the locker room here at the HemisFair Arena! It’s Fritz Von Erich and he’s looking for revenge it looks!
Gorilla Monsoon: Fritz has the Freebird Hair Cream and just put it right into the eyes of Michael Hayes! After all the anguish that Hayes has caused between Junkyard Dog and Fritz Von Erich and that poisonous hair cream, it’s about time he feel the wrath of his own hair cream!
Gordon Solie: Terry Gordy has rushed to Hayes’s aid as he now feels the acid burning in his eyes. He finally feels the pain he put those other two men through. I hate to say it, but he had this coming and today was the day.
Terry Gordy: Stop it! Stop the darn match! Michael can’t see! Ahhhh geez. Stop!
Gorilla Monsoon: That’s it, Terry Gordy has surrendered the match for the Fabulous Freebirds! The winners of the match are the Von Erichs!
Gordon Solie: Well hopefully this is it. Hopefully this is the last time we see the Fabulous Freebirds for a long time and hopefully Michael Hayes has finally been taught his lesson.
Gorilla Monsoon: We are onto our next match here at AWA Southwest Shootout as we have John Studd defending the AWA United States Championship against the challenge of Jerry Lawler.
Gordon Solie: It was Kaufman who proclaimed himself the king of pro wrestling and went so far as to have Curt Hennig interfere on his behalf so that he could defeat Lawler in a crown vs. crown match back at AWA When Worlds Collide.
Gorilla Monsoon: Andy Kaufman is supposedly nursing a “neck injury” after Billy Graham had had enough of Kaufman’s antics and let Lawler piledrive him. As you can see, Graham has come out to be in the corner of Lawler in this all important match that Lawler won the right to a few weeks back on AWA All-Star Wrestling when he defeated Curt Hennig.
Gorilla Monsoon: This is something that Lawler will have to work hard to avoid if he wants any chance in this match. The long reach of John Studd could wreak havoc on Lawler especially if he continues to fall into the strength and power of Studd in this back breaking bear hugs of his.
Gordon Solie: UGH! That’s got to separate a rib or two! John Studd just stood on Lawler’s stomach with the full force of his 400+ pound frame. Lawler’s wind has got to be totally out of his sails after that one!
Gorilla Monsoon: John Studd is just having his way with Lawler at this point. Lawler doesn’t stand a chance against one of the most unstoppable forces in the AWA today. At this rate, John Studd could be the AWA US champ for a long time to come.
Gordon Solie: Studd has Lawler just about beat here and he looks for the adoration of Kaufman in the corner.
Andy Kaufman: You’re doing great Johnny! Finish this guy! Finish him! We have a private jet to catch to get to the party in Hollywood tonight! Let’s get this thing finished up!
Gorilla Monsoon: That plane of Kaufman’s may be sitting on the runway for a little longer tonight in a holding pattern as Jerry Lawler comes firing back with those haymaker punches of his. One solid shot from those cold put any man down, even a big man like Studd.
Gordon Solie: Jerry is coming back as he has climbed up to the middle rope and comes crashing down with his signature Piston Punch off the ropes! Lawler has come storming back in this match as it seemed like he drew strength from the cockiness of Kaufman on the outside.
Gorilla Monsoon: The Piston Punch may do it as Danny Davis is down, one, two…thr….
Gordon Solie: Curt Hennig puts the foot of Studd on the bottom rope and Davis notices the foot on the rope just in time from slapping the mat for three and awarding Lawler the title.
Gorilla Monsoon: Superstar Graham has seen enough of this as he hits his old comrade square in the face and seems to be firmly on the side of Lawler getting the title now!
Gordon Solie: He’s not injured, I knew, you knew he wasn’t injured! Andy Kaufman is up on the apron with the AWA US belt and he’s about to blast Lawler right in the face with it!
Gorilla Monsoon: It’s Andre the Giant! He has come and scooped Kaufman right off the apron and prevented him from using the belt on Lawler!
Gordon Solie: You’ll notice that Andre has a shorter hairstyle than the last time we saw him as it was Kaufman causing him to be body slammed last month at AWA Superdome Spectacular by John Studd which caused his hair to be cut. You know Andre hasn’t forgotten that and has come back for revenge!
Gorilla Monsoon: Lawler has used the Andre distraction and Studd is now up in the grasp of Lawler’s piledriver. Can he spike the big man on his head?!
Gorilla Monsoon: He did it! He just dropped Studd! And we have a three count! The winner and NEW AWA United States Champion is Jerry Lawler!
Gordon Solie: Andre is taking care of Kaufman by carrying him to the locker room!
Gordon Solie: Lawler celebrates the title win with his new found friend, Superstar Graham as he proudly hoists up the AWA US title belt. But you know there’s one thing on his mind, getting back the crown that was stolen from him in Chicago two months ago.
Gorilla Monsoon: Studd and Hennig are lying on the floor in a heap of a mess, but where has Kaufman gone? I would not want to be in the clutches of Andre the Giant when the big French man is mad. We’ll be right back with another title match.
Gorilla Monsoon: Next up here at AWA Southwest Shootout, we have the AWA World Tag Team Championship match as it will be the champions, the New Zealand Sheepherders, taking on the duo of two newcomers to the AWA, Chris Adams and Terry Taylor.
Gordon Solie: We’re actually quite surprised that this exciting tandem of Adams and Taylor is even here tonight. We saw the Great Kokina do a double Banzai Splash to both men on AWA All-Star Wrestling after they won the title shot after the count out victory over King Kong Bundy and one Man Gang. Hopefully the injuries sustained by those men last week don’t have an effect on them tonight.
Gordon Solie: Terry Taylor is fired up for this one as he is going to town on Luke Williams. That heinous attack by Captain Lou Albano and his group definitely has let the fuse in Terry Taylor to say the least.
Gorilla Monsoon: What a move here by Terry Taylor! A double under hook suplex sends Williams down hard to the mat. If the New Zealand Sheepherders were overlooking this team, they better think again.
Gordon Solie: Tags have been made on both sides as that sends Chris Adams and Butch Miller into the match to square off but it’s Adams keeping the momentum going for his team as he delivers a punishing spinning neck breaker that really has the champs up against the ropes. Can the duo of these two promising rookies pull off the upset against the cagey veterans?
Gorilla Monsoon: Oh what a dive! Chris Adams showing us why he may be the new breed of professional wrestler as he uses his acrobatic skill to dive through the ropes and take out both of the Sheepherders!
Gorilla Monsoon: Hold it, this isn’t right! Chris Adams has both of the Sheepherders dazed and confused on the outside but here comes that massive man known as Great Kokina who Lou Albano uses as his enforcer as he has ripped Terry Taylor right out of the corner and is now pummeling him with rights and lefts on the outside.
Gorilla Monsoon: Chris Adams is literally staring down the barrel of a cannon right now. He has got to be outweighed by this large man nearly two to three times over. Great Kokina represents the wall between the Adams and Taylor and the title belts. Does Adams have anything in his arsenal of moves that can stop this man?
Gordon Solie: Chris Adams went to his bread and butter move and it looks like it has paid off! The Judo Kick from Adams has sent the Great Kokina falling to the mat and the shockwaves are being felt throughout the San Antonio area tonight!
Gorilla Monsoon: Lou Albano knows if he doesn’t do something quick then he’s going to lose the belts!
Gordon Solie: Turn around Calhoun!
Gorilla Monsoon: Lou Albano just blasted his own man, Butch Miller right in the head and just ate a big Adam’s Judo Kick right in the mush for his troubles! I can’t believe when I am seeing here!
Gordon Solie: Albano’s chair shot is going to cost the Sheepherders the belts! We have a three count! The winners and NEW AWA World Tag Team Champions, Chris Adams and Terry Taylor!
Gorilla Monsoon: This has got to be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the AWA! The two newcomers now getting their hands raised by Jerry Calhoun as they proudly display the tag title belts. With this duo together and the perseverance and grit that they have shown, Chris Adams and Terry Taylor could be the champions for a long time to come and the sky is the limit for this duo!
Gordon Solie: Here’s the one we have been waiting for. Ric Flair’s nightmares come true as he must take on the man looking for a debt to be paid and a man that Flair once called student, protégé and friend. Ric Flair is in trouble from both side in this match as he defends the AWA world Heavyweight Championship against Nikita Koloff and Lex Luger.
Gorilla Monsoon: The man to score the first pin fall or submission on one of his opponents will be declared the winner and becomes the AWA World champ.
Gorilla Monsoon: I have to give it to Flair in this triangle match as he has the luxury of letting these two beat on each other then he can swoop in and try to score the fall.
Gordon Solie: No love lost between Koloff and Luger in this one as they had a hard fought match last week on AWA All-Star Wrestling that ended in a double count out at which time AWA President Stanley Blackburn made the decision that they would both be granted the AWA World title shot here at AWA Southwest Shootout.
Gorilla Monsoon: This one may end in a hurry! We have seen this in many of Nikita Soloff’s victories, a sudden and swift win for the big Russian. He just threw Lex Luger right out of his way and just connected with the devastating Russian Sickle on Flair!
Gordon Solie: The champion is down and out on the floor. He is lying motionless after that devastating blow straight to the head! He may not recover from this one. This leaves just Luger and Koloff in the ring to fight it out for the title!
Gorilla Monsoon: Lex just caught the giant Russian off guard and has him up in the Torture Rack! Could the massive undefeated streak of Nikita Koloff be coming to an end here tonight?
Gordon Solie: What is referee Danny Davis doing? He’s supposed to be giving his full attention to the action in the ring and the submission possibility that Lex Luger has right now? Why is he checking on Ric Flair on the outside? Flair is out cold, he’s not going to be a part of this match anytime soon.
Gorilla Monsoon: Good, I am glad that Lex is saying something to Davis! He had Koloff beat and yelling for mercy and Danny Davis wasn’t paying attention! That may have cost Lex the title! What has gotten into Danny Davis?
Gordon Solie: While Davis and Luger are bickering over in the corner, Jim Cornette is attempting to stick his two cents into this match by sliding the loaded tennis racket over to Nikita!
Gorilla Monsoon: But like a sneaky linebacker in football keeping his eyes on the quarterback, Ric Flair has intercepted the pass attempt between Cornette and Koloff and now has control of the racket!
Gordon Solie: Question is, who’s Flair going to hit with the racket?
Gorilla Monsoon: He just hit Lex Luger! Apparently he though Nikita was weakened up enough from the Luger Torture Rack and nailed Luger instead. Jim Cornette is up on the apron pleading his case but I don’t think that’s going to get him anywhere as it appears that Danny Davis is not the unbiased referee he should be tonight.
Gordon Solie: Flair with a pin attempt here, and he gets the three count! Nikita Koloff tried to sneak in there at the last moment but it was to no avail as it appeared that Danny Davis was on a mission to get the win for Flair and Flair alone.
Gorilla Monsoon: The winner and STILL AWA World Heavyweight Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
Gordon Solie: Dusty Rhodes has now come in as Flair is celebrating with Heenan in the corner. After all the help that Dusty and Luger gave them a few weeks back when they were being attacked by the Jim Cornette Experience, how could they turn their backs on Luger like this?
Gorilla Monsoon: You can’t trust Flair one bit. He will do anything, and I mean anything, to keep that AWA title belt around his waist.
Gorilla Monsoon: Is this the payback and thanks that Dusty gets from the Horsemen? Barry Windham has attacked and just nailed Dusty right in the back of the knee with a shovel! Dusty has had knee issues in the past and you’ve got to know that the Horsemen remember that and picked that spot to go after in this un called for attack on a guy that if it wasn’t for Dusty, they would have been left laying by Jim Cornette and his crew.
Gordon Solie: After all the help that Dusty gave Flair a few weeks ago, this is an act of war that I can promise you that the Dream will not soon forget.
Gorilla Monsoon: Things may be getting ugly here real soon as Barry Windham is stomping on the leg of Dusty Rhodes as his leg is tangled in the steel chair. This is just down right wrong what the Four Horsemen are doing right now.
Gordon Solie: This situation has not spiraled out of control as after the beating Dusty’s leg just took from the steel chair, he is now having to endure the Figure Four of Ric Flair! Is there anyone there to save him and Lex?
Gorilla Monsoon: The rest of Jim Cornette’s crew in Buzz Sawyer and Bam Bam Bigelow have hit the ring and it looks like they are hitting anything that moves. They are at the very least giving Dusty a breather as they attack the Horsemen.
Gordon Solie: Not so fast on that breather remark there Gorilla. Nikita Koloff is now attacking Dusty Rhodes himself. It appears that all three of these sides hate each other and will do anything in their power to get rid of the other two sides.
Gorilla Monsoon: Wait a minute, here’s a man that we had heard was going to be making his way to the AWA but has shown up at the exact right time! Magnum TA is here and he is here to help his longtime friend Dusty Rhodes in his most desperate time of need!
Gordon Solie: I don’t think a man has ever gone toe to toe with Nikita Koloff like this before and has stood to tell about it! This is unbelievable! Magnum TA is here and he is making an immediate impact here in the AWA in the World title picture!
Gorilla Monsoon: Magnum TA has cleared the ring as he is swinging the steel chair. He has a bitter look on his face and looks to be out for vengeance in the name of Dusty Rhodes.
Gordon Solie: Well, that is all the time we have for AWA Southwest Shootout. What a night.
Gorilla Monsoon: What a night indeed, we definitely have some questions to be answered once again. What was with Danny Davis tonight?
Gordon Solie: Something tells me that Danny Davis may be on the payroll of the Four Horsemen.
Gorilla Monsoon: For Gordon Solie, I am Gorilla Monsoon saying good night from all of us here in the AWA as we hope you have enjoyed AWA Southwest Shootout here in San Antonio. Good night!
