Ken Resnick: Welcome everyone to the Superdome here in New Orleans, LA. as the AWA presents, AWA Superdome Specatcular! I am Ken Resnick joined here at ringside tonight with the incomparable, Gordon Solie.
Gordon Solie: What a night of action we have here Ken as we look to get things started off with a bang as it will be Dusty Rhodes meeting Jake Roberts in the Last Battle of Atlanta cage match. This one should be a violent and brutal ending to this feud.
Ken Resnick: The rules to this match are simple, both men will be locked inside of this steel cage structure with the roof on top of it to ensure that no can enter and no one can escape. Referee Earl Hebner is with us here at the announcers table and will have a microphone that goes all over the arena. When one man cannot answer Earl Hebner’s ten count, the match will be over and we will have a winner. This is a match that has been months in the making as these two men have battled back and forth and it only seems fitting this violent feud would end in a structure like this Last Battle of New Orleans cage.
Gordon Solie: Here comes Jake Roberts through the curtain as it is rather strange that he is not flanked by One Man Gang and King Kong Bundy as I would think Jake is looking for any upper hand that he can find in a match of this magnitude.
Ken Resnick: Dusty has entered the cage and he is closing and locking the door behind him. There’s no going back now, these two are in a battle of life or death now. These two have reached a fever pitch and it will now be settled in the Last Battle of New Orleans.
Gordon Solie: Dusty starting out here quickly as he is already using the cage as a weapon as he bashes the back of the head of Jake Roberts into the side of the steel cage. Remember, no referee inside the ring, he is outside the ring by us and only here to place a ten count on one of the combatants. Other than that, he is not here to enforce any rules so it’s anything goes for Rhodes and Roberts.
Ken Resnick: Oh that cage fencing is like a cheese grater. Look how it is tearing into the flesh of the forehead of Jake Roberts. Parents, if you’re children are watching this match, you may want to use discretion in letting them view this match.
Gordon Solie: This is a moment that Dusty has been waiting to get for months. He is standing over the battered body of Jake Roberts and taunting him. He knows that finally he has Jake one on one and can settle this once and for all.
Ken Resnick: Jake Roberts is attempting to climb the cage and find a way to escape, but this cage is locked up tight as a drum. There will be no escaping from the grasp of Dusty Rhodes this time.
Gordon Solie: All those months of frustration and aggravation are finally getting released from Dusty Rhodes. He is drilling Jake Roberts into a hole as he connects time after time after time with those ferocious Bionic Elbow drops.
Ken Resnick: I knew it, I knew it. Something had to be up when the Gang and Bundy weren’t at ringside to begin this match.
Gordon Solie: They are trying to tear the cage door off, but a lock was placed on the door so that they can’t get in. Yet we’ll have to see because King Kong Bundy is an absolute monster and may very well have the ability to rip the cage door right off the hinges.
Ken Resnick: I can’t believe it! Bundy was somehow able to rip the door open and now Jake Roberts is trying to escape the cage. But escaping the cage will not win him the match.
Gordon Solie: But here to save the day and to neutralize the interference of Gang and Bundy, Bruiser Brody and Dick Murdoch have hit the scene and they are brawling with the two other members of the Snake Pit back to the locker room area.
Gordon Solie: Jake is a desperate man, so desperate to get away from Dusty and so desperate in fact that he is climbing the steel cage to the top of it to try and escape Dusty Rhodes.
Ken Resnick: This steel cage structure is 17 feet off the ground. Any fall from that height by either of these combatants could pose a risk of serious injury to their body.
Ken Resnick: Both men have made their way to the top of the steel cage and look as Jake Roberts is begging and pleading with Dusty Rhodes to show him mercy. But I think after all the agony and pain that Roberts has caused Dusty over the past few months, Jake will find no mercy from Rhodes especially from that giant elbow that Dusty loves to throw.
Gordon Solie: It looks like Jake Roberts is now trying to play the ace up his sleeve here as the interference from Gang and Bundy failed. He’s trying to use that mystical club to put a spell on Dusty Rhodes once again. Dusty’s mind may still be fragile from AWA When Worlds Collide so we’ll have to see if this spell takes hold.
Ken Resnick: Oh no, that might be it. That might be all for the fragile state of mind of Dusty Rhodes. He has fallen to his knees and has begun to be Jake Roberts for forgiveness in turning his back on the Snake Pit.
Gordon Solie: If Dusty has faltered during possibly the biggest match of his career in quite some time, I think that we may never see Dusty the same way we did ever again.
Ken Resnick: Wait! What is this? Dusty was playing possum and the spell of Jake Roberts seems to have had no effect on him at all. He’s just delivered a low blow to Jake Roberts.
Gordon Solie: Dusty seems to be tugging at our heart strings as he goes back and forth between good and evil.
Gordon Solie: What a devastating maneuver this could be. Dusty has Jake perched up on his shoulder and seems to be looking for a running power slam here straight down onto the solid steel cage roof!
Ken Resnick: Oh what a crash. The back of Jake Roberts has got to be completely devastated after that giant slam.
Gordon Solie: Do you hear that sound Ken? It sounds like the cage roof is starting to buckle under the stress of that slam.
Gordon Solie: The roof of the cage has given way after that power slam and Jake Roberts has fallen straight down on the hard mat of the ring. It looked like he smacked the back of his head really bad on the canvas as well. He may very well be knocked out. Referee Earl Hebner has grabbed the microphone here at ringside and has begun his ten count.
Earl Hebner: One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. TEN!
Ken Resnick: That’s it! Dusty Rhodes has finally vanquished Jake Roberts and has sent him straight down like he said he would last week on AWA All-Star Wrestling.
Gordon Solie: Dusty Rhodes holding that mystical club in his possession may be the ultimate sign that Dusty Rhodes has finally won the war and hopefully got ridden of Jake Roberts. Dusty is now asking for the microphone on top of the cage.
Dusty Rhodes: Finaly, oh finally, free at last! I have defeated Jake Roberts and got ridden of my mortal foe. When I first came into the AWA, I stepped in here challenging for the AWA World Heavyweight title right away. But I feel that over time I have lost sight of that goal. So today, it is now time to turn the page and begin a new quest. Ric Flair, you’ve got something I want. I know it won’t be easy. I know you got the Four Horsemen around you and that’s why I am assembiling a team as we speak to help back me up. Ric Flair, I am coming for you and that title, so you better watch out!
Gordon Solie: Moving along here at AWA Superdome Spectacular, we sure do have a grudge match here for you. The Fabulous Freebirds take on the Von Erichs in a six man tag team match. These two teams have been embattled in a bitter war the past few months and we’ll have to see if tonight that gets settled or escalated to new heights.
Ken Resnick: The workhorse of the Fabulous Freebirds, Terry Gordy, starts off this match and delivers a spine numbing backbreaker on Kevin Von Erich.
Gordon Solie: You know what Kevin has really got to be amped up and ready for this match. Especially after Michael Hayes chair shot cost him the AWA World Heavyweight title back at WF Figamania X.
Ken Resnick: The pure and natural strength of Terry Gordy is just astonishing. He is just lifting Kevin Von Erich like a sack of potatoes and doing with him just about anything he pleases.
Gordon Solie: Here’s where the Fabulous Freebirds may be at their most dangerous, in a three on one situation. Mike Von Erich finds himself in no man’s land as he is getting absolutely pummeled by all three members of the Freebirds.
Ken Resnick: Where is the ref to get in there and break this up?!
Ken Resnick: Buddy Roberts is taking full advantage of that three on one beatdown that they just put on Mike as he has him up for the piledriver, one of the most dangerous maneuvers in pro wrestling today.
Gordon Solie: We’ve seen this before. Buddy Roberts is showboating thinking that he’s got the match in the bag when we all know it is far, far, from over. He better watch himself because the Von Erichs may very well be some of the most resilient competitors I have seen in my days of calling wrestling matches.
Ken Resnick: Take note as Mike is working his way over to the corner to tag in his brother Kerry while Buddy Roberts poses for the cameras of the thousands in attendance here in the Superdome tonight.
Ken Resnick: Mike has got the tag to Kerry and with Buddy Roberts attention diverted away from the match, Kerry takes the opportunity to lock in the famous Von Erich Iron Claw!
Ken Resnick: Michael Hayes comes in to break up the Iron Claw on Buddy Roberts but instead Kerry turns the tables on Hayes and locks him in an Iron Claw now! Kerry is on a roll dishing out Iron Claws to all of the Freebirds!
Gordon Solie: Roberts is staggered, Hayes is staggered, Kerry is pleading with Terry Gordy to get in the ring now as he’s got one more Iron Claw to dish out!
Ken Resnick: Of course the crafty ring warrior in Terry Gordy evades the iron Claw of Kerry and instead connects with a solid shot to the gut which sends Kerry holding his stomach as he falls to the mat in pain.
Ken Resnick: Many men love to use the powerslam, but I have to put Terry Gordy right up there with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams as two of the men who can connect with that move and have the most damage inflicted on their opponent in the process. Earl Hebner is down for the count, but Kerry escapes the attempt at the count of two.
Gordon Solie: Terry Gordy is softening up the back of Kerry Von Erich here, not too sure exactly what sort of move he’s looking for in his attempt to finish off this match.
Ken Resnick: Wait, what is this? The head of the Von Erich family, the father, Fritz Von Erich is down at ringside now and is cheering his boys on to a hopeful victory against the Fabulous Freebirds.
Gordon Solie: Fritz was a very accomplished wrestler back in his day and if there’s one thing I know about Fritz, he’s not afraid to get involved physically if he has to in order to defend his sons from any trouble that they may run into.
Ken Resnick: The brawl has spilled to the outside of the ring here at the Superdome. These two teams hate each other and seemingly will go to any length to eliminate the other.
Gordon Solie: Terry Gordy is continuing the beat down inside the ring and seems to me threatening Fritz with some sort of harm. Knowing Fritz as I have for many years, I know he will not back down from a fight, even from a man as large and as powerful as Terry Gordy.
Ken Resnick: A situation is brewing here and this doesn’t look good. Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy have backed Fritz into a corner and Michael Hayes has gotten possession of the Freebirds Hair Cream back from the Von Erichs. They wouldn’t, they couldn’t…would they?
Ken Resnick: NO! NO! NO! I can’t believe the gull of the Fabulous Freebirds. They just hit the Von Erich family where it hurts most! They have just attempted to blind the father of the Von Erich boys, Fritz, right in the eyes with the Freebirds Hair Cream. Poor Fritz may be blinded for life. They stuff needs to be banned from ringside, first it was Junkyard Dog and now it’s Fritz Von Erich that has been blinded by that toxic sludge!
Gordon Solie: Earl Hebner has counted the Von Erichs out of this match and the Fabulous Freebirds will take the victory.
Ken Resnick: Wins and losses may be the furthest thought in the Von Erichs mind at this point. They have a major look of concern on their faces here as Fritz is down and doesn’t look to be in good shape here. We’ll hopefully have a report for you on the condition of Fritz Von Erich next week on AWA All-Star Wrestling. We’ll be back with the $15,000 vs. Hair Body Slam Challenge after this.
Gordon Solie: Here we go with a high stakes match here at AWA Superdome Spectacular. Andre the Giant puts his hair on the line against John Studd who puts $15,000 of Andy Kaufman’s money on the line in a Body Slam Challenge match. The rules are simple in this match. The first man to be body slammed by the other will be the loser of the match and will need to pay up either with hair or money.
Ken Resnick: I just hope we get a fair and even match here, Kaufman has brought his entire Cabaret of Hollywood Stars out with him. Curt Hennig looks to have the suitcase full of the $15,000, at least he was a man of his word and is willing to pay up if his man is not the one and only true giant in pro wrestling.
Gordon Solie: The stare down between these two massive men. John Studd is nicknamed “Big” for a reason but when he stands side by side with Andre he looks like a dwarf.
Gordon Solie: Andre gets this match started out by using that massive height advantage that he has over Studd by crashing down hard on the top of the head with a karate chop like strike.
Ken Resnick: I can bet you that Studd has never been struck on top of the head like that in his career since no man would ever be able to reach up there due to his height.
Ken Resnick: Andre the Giant is now using that hand that seems to be as big a baseball player’s catcher mitt to just manhandle Studd in the corner and do whatever he pleases.
Gordon Solie: Keep a eye out for Kaufman and his Hollywood Stars. They seem to be getting restless here and may soon interfere in order that Kaufman isn’t $15,000 lighter in the pocket book at the end of the night.
Gordon Solie: Andre has him up, this could be it for the match and Kaufman’s $15,000!
Ken Resnick: What’s the Superstar doing up on the apron? He shouldn’t be up there.
Gordon Solie: Andre is forced to put down Studd as Graham has diverted Andre’s attention away, but Graham pays a heavy price for the interference as he is sent flying to the Superdome floor with that massive forearm strike by Andre the Giant!
Ken Resnick: A chop block to the back of Andre’s knee. As much as I don’t like this dirty and cheap shot by Studd, I have to give him that it is smart. The power base for a body slam comes from the legs. If Andre has a weakened knee, he may not be able to life the 400 pound plus John Studd up to win this match.
Gordon Solie: Studd continues to work on that knee. Remember it was originally Abdullah the Butcher back many months ago that injured Andre’s knee with a steel chair back at the AWA Studio days of AWA All-Star Wrestling. Andre missed some time due to that knee injury and ever since then has work that white knee pad on his leg to protect it from the wrath that Abdullah first laid on the knee.
Ken Resnick: Andre has turned the tide here and is looking for a body slam but you can tell his balance is very unsteady.
Gordon Solie: Perhaps his concentration on Studd in this match is also unsteady as yet another member of the Cabaret of Hollywood Stars, this time Gino Hernandez, is up on the ring apron holding Andre back from slamming Studd and finishing this match.
Ken Resnick: You’d think that the Cabaret of Hollywood Stars would have learned their lesson by know about jumping on the apron! Andre delivers a rib busting knee to the gut that sends Gino down to the Superdome floor to lay next to Superstar Graham who is also trying to recover from a blow from Andre.
Gordon Solie: Imagine going through the woods and suddenly being hit with a giant tree trunk of a enormous redwood tree. Well, that must be exactly how John Studd feels right now. An enormous clothesline has Andre setup to give the body slam another chance. Could the third time possibly be the charm?
Ken Resnick: Andre has Studd up a third time and…..yet again the Cabaret of Hollywood Stars member Curt Hennig is up on the apron! I can’t believe this! This is the third time that this match should be over and Andre should have $15,000 of Andy Kaufman’s money to do with as he pleases!
Ken Resnick: Hennig can join Hernandez and Graham on the floor of the Superdome after that giant boot right to the sternum!
Gordon Solie: John Studd has taken advantage of the third set of distractions and has actually been able to get Andre up on his shoulder. But will Studd be able to muster the strength to get Andre up and over for the complete body slam?!
Ken Resnick: Wait, what is Kaufman doing?
Gordon Solie: Studd doesn’t seem to have the strength to slam Andre over but Andy Kaufman has jumped on the apron and is lifting up the feet of Andre the Giant so that John Studd can get him over for the slam!
Ken Resnick: Oh you’ve got to be kidding me!!!
Gordon Solie: John Studd has just won the Body Slam Challenge match against Andre the Giant in quite a upset. Although I have to say that he didn’t do it on his own and had an assist from one Andy Kaufman.
Ken Resnick: Oh this is not fair, it was Studd’s strength versus Andre’s strength. No where was Andy Kaufman in that equation!
Gordon Solie: Adding insult to injury now, John Studd has just blasted Andre over the head with that briefcase.
Ken Resnick: Look Gordon! The briefcase just flew open and there was no money inside! Andy Kaufman had no intention of paying up his side of the bet in the event that he lost! This is just an absolutely terrible situation that we are seeing unfold here at AWA Superdome Spectacular!
Ken Resnick: Oh this is sick, I don’t think I can even watch this. This is absolutely terrible. I have to look away Gordon.
Gordon Solie: Andy Kaufman and John Studd have tied Andre the Giant’s arms up in the ropes. Andy Kaufman has got a set of barber’s trimming sheers and look at him go to work on the hair of Andre the Giant.
Ken Resnick: One day, one day I tell you, this Kaufman is going to get what’s coming to him. Mark my words.
Gordon Solie: Let’s head back to the locker room with Jimmy and Ronnie Garvin.
Jimmy Garvin: How do the pretty people keep their pretty bodies? Working out, that’s how! Me and my cousin Ronnie are getting primed and ready to make another run at the championships of the AWA. I know Eddie Gilbert may be back around these parts again but I can’t let him distract me. I have to persevere and do what’s best for me, Ronnie and of course my lovely girl, Precious.
Gordon Solie: We seem to be having some sort of disturbance in the locker room area as during the Garvins work out session Eddie Gilbert has attacked with the Long Riders!
Ken Resnick: Eddie says he’s in trouble with the former investors of Hot Stuff International and the Long Riders are looking for their lost wages after Jimmy Garvin shut down Hot Stuff International!
Gordon Solie: Oh…what a sickening blow! The Long Riders just smashed that weight right into the face of Ronnie Garvin. He may easily have a broken jaw. The reunited Hot Stuff International is really going to town on the Garvins here. Poor Precious can only watch the mugging as Eddie’s new valet, Missy Hyatt, is holding Precious back!
Ken Resnick: Wait…that’s….Rick Rude and “Iceman” King Parsons attacking Hot Stuff International! And looking at that woman attacking Missy Hyatt. That is the ever powerful ladies wrestler, Lady Maxine!
Gordon Solie: For months we saw Gilbert and Rude squabble over the affection of Precious, only to have her turn her back on both of them and run back to Jimmy Garvin. You know Rude has a score to settle with Gilbert and don’t be surprised if he has one to settle with Jimmy Garvin as well as it was Jimmy Garvin after all that sent both he and Eddie Gilbert packing from the AWA for 30 days.
Rick Rude: The Ravishing One is back. This time, I have a woman that is tough as nails and has three times the muscle of that little dinky Precious, she is the powerful Lady Maxine. I also had to go out and get myself a tag partner that I could trust, yet had the looks and charisma of the Ravishing One in Iceman King Parsons. Gilbert, you cost me. Garvin, you cost me. Well now, I am going to cost you. You’ll both be run out of the AWA when all is said and done. It won’t be for 30 days, it won’t be for 60 days, it won’t even be for 90 days, it will be FOREVER!
Ken Resnick: The Garvin/Rude/Gilbert love triangle is back and this time the results could have a everlasting effect on the careers of all three men. We’ll be back after this short intermission with the AWA Tag Team title match.
Ken Resnick: Here we go with our next match here at AWA Superdome Spectacular as it will be the AWA World Tag Team title match. The challengers are already in the ring as it is the wild and wooly New Zealand Sheepherders along with their manager, the Captain Lou Albano.
Gordon Solie: We saw the Sheepherders rudely and abruptly make their AWA debut a few weeks ago on All-Star Wrestling. They interjected themselves into the #1 contenders match, pulled off the upset and won, and thus find themselves with the tag team title shot here tonight on pay per view.
Ken Resnick: The challengers better watch it because these champions are no push overs. The two veteran competitors, Playboy Buddy Rose and Pretty Boy Doug Somers are the reigning champions. They have actually be out in San Francisco and Las Vegas defending the titles in those territories so they have kept themselves in ultimate fighting shape lately as they face this stiff test against two of the craziest guys that have ever stepped inside the squared circle.
Gordon Solie: It’s Butch Miller in there to start against Doug Somers as the crazy New Zealander comes crashing down on Somers with a stiff right hand. These guys have a reputation as being some of the craziest guys that will literally do anything it takes to secure a victory.
Ken Resnick: Looks like in addition to their brawling techniques, these Sheepherders can get a bit technical as well. Who knew that we would ever see a spinning neckbreaker out of Butch Miller? These guys have come to fight tonight and may walk away with the tag belts.
Gordon Solie: Double team attack here as Miller tags in Luke Williams and together they are able to hold Somers down and drop a collaborative elbow right into the forehead. These guys have been teaming for many years and the tag team work shows in the results they have gotten in the ring.
Ken Resnick: Somehow, Doug Somers was able to get the tag out to partner Buddy Rose and now Rose turns the table on the Sheepherders. Buddy Rose has been all over the world in pro wrestling and you know he has to have ran into the Sheepherders a time or two. He knew what to expect coming in and is attacking.
Gordon Solie: Strength is not a term you usually use to describe Buddy Rose. A man with what many would call a flabby beer gut weighing in at 271 pounds….
Buddy Rose: I heard that Solie!!! It’s 217 pounds!
Gordon Solie: I swear that Rose’s ears must start ringing when he hears someone call him 271 pounds. Anyways, here he is with a big atomic drop to really send this match into over drive and make it a match where either team may easily be able to pick up the victory at any given time.
Ken Resnick: Just like you said Gordon! This match could end at any second! The Ugly Face Killer has been pulled put by Rose and Somers on Williams. The champs should easily retain the titles after that one!
Ken Resnick: What the? Who the? Have you ever seen a man as large as this?! Who is that?
Gordon Solie: I have never seen the man before in my life, but he looks to be siding with the Sheepherders as he just cracked Doug Somers right over the skull!
Ken Resnick: Don’t tell me he’s going to…ugh. That’s got to be over 500 pounds crashing down on the chest of Doug Somers! That’s definitely got to be all she wrote.
Gordon Solie: Luke Williams down for the cover as the count by Danny Davis is academic after that incredible splash that may have registered on the Richter scale here at the Superdome. The winners and NEW AWA World Tag Team Champions, the New Zealand Sheepherders, Butch Miller and Luke Williams.
Lou Albano: The Captain is the manager of champions. I manage only the best and the Sheepherders are the best. Nooooooo body is going to stop us! I have formed a triumvirate of three of the best wrestlers in the entire world today. In addition to the Sheepherders, let me introduce you to my latest discovery who I discovered way out in the far reaches of the far east. He is the one, the only, the biggest athlete in the world today, he is Great Kokina! The tag titles are only the beginning for my group of stars….just wait and see!
Ken Resnick: Here we go with our main event of the evening here at AWA Superdome Spectacular. The AWA World Heavyweight title is on the line as Ric Flair, the so called “living legend” takes on who I consider to be the real living legend, Bruno Sammartino. Bruno knows about the funny business that Flair and his Horsemen tend to create on the outside, so Bruno has enlisted the help of the former NWA champ, Lou Thesz, to be in his corner to make sure this match is on the up and up. Referee Danny Davis has been assigned to this contest.
Gordon Solie: And here comes the flash and glamour of the champion, the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, headed to the ring as by his side is the business advisor of the Horsemen, Bobby Heenan as well as member of the Four Horsemen, Tully Blanchard. Flair I must say cannot look pat Bruno here tonight. You could see last week when Bruno issued the challenge that he had really lit a fire in Bruno. You could almost say that he is a Hot Bruno here tonight.
Ken Resnick: Before Danny Davis has even had a chance to ring the bell on this one, it seems to be that we have some sort of disturbance going on at ringside. Nikita Koloff and Jim Cornette are making their presecence felt as they are still looking for Flair to pay up entirely what is owed to them from the Harley Race bounty. That debt it seems is only known by Flair, Koloff and Cornette. Flair will not even tell his business advisor Bobby Heenan what the deal between himself and the Koloff/Cornette connection is.
Gordon Solie: The bell rings and this match is under way as Flair grabs Bruno and has him in a front face lock. I’m not sure from what angle that Flair wants to attack Bruno tonight. Bruno even in semi-retirement, still avidly works out every day and as you can see, the muscle is still there and the stamina is still there as well. He may want to try and put away Bruno quick as Bruno only seems to get stronger as time goes on in matches.
Gordon Solie: Not sure if Flair is possibly listening to our commentary at ringside, but he may be going for that quick hit approach as he is already working over the knee of Bruno Sammartino perhaps in preparation for that Figure Four leg lock.
Ken Resnick: The taunting and showboating of Flair has really riled up Bruno Sammartino as he comes crashing down into the corner with a clothesline he likes to call the Legends Line. He has Bruno really riled up here tonight and after a couple of close calls in title defenses as of late, Flair may feel the title slowly slipping from his grasp to a man that has formerly held the WWWF World title himself.
Gordon Solie: The Italian strongman hasn’t lost a step since his heyday. Flair is up on the shoulders of Bruno as he’s asking Flair to tell him to give it up.
Danny Davis: Want to give it up Ric? Ric?
Bruno Sammartino: I’ll tell ya…give it up Ric!
Ken Resnick: Flair now is trying to escape the grasp of Bruno but I don’t think he’s going to make it every far trying to climb to the top rope to get away. Bruno uses moves like a cat to get over to the corner and cut Flair off at the pass.
Ken Resnick: Flair is caught now as Bruno has him up for a press slam that sends Flair tumbiling down to the mat.
Gordon Solie: I am really surprised that neither Heenan or Blanchard has tried to make a move yet in this match. Perhaps it’s the prescence of Lou Thesz or quite possibly the ever watching eye of Nikita Koloff on the outside that has them spooked from trying anything.
Gordon Solie: We’ve got some sort of raucous going on at ringside here. Can we get our camera close up to hear what they are saying?
Jim Cornette: You owe us! You owe Nikita! Pay up now or we are going to have to take drastic measures!
Bobby Heenan: I don’t know what you’re talking about. That’s between you and Flair! I have nothing to do with any of this bounty business! It’s all Ric!
Ken Resnick: Many people seem to be interested in what this whole deal is between Flair, Cornette and Koloff. Everyone that is including Bruno Sammartino who has his taken his eyes off Flair to check out what the disturbance is.
Gordon Solie: Bruno turned his back for just one second to see what was going on outside the ring and the “Dirtiest Player in the Game” strikes with an illegal chop block on Bruno! That may have weakened his weery knees to a point of no return.
Ken Resnick: We’ve seen this sight so many times, Flair placing the leg on the ropes and coming down hard on the leg to soften it up. This means one thing….the Figure Four is coming.
Gordon Solie: Flair has the Figure Four locked in and it doesn’t look good for Bruno. Danny Davis is right in there asking Bruno if he wants to give it up and…yes. That’s it for this match. Ric Flair is STILL the AWA World Heavyweight champion with a submission victory over Bruno Sammartino.
Ken Resnick: Flair went to grab the belt and….Nikita and Cornette have stolen the belt!
Jim Cornette: You knew what the promise was Flair, you would give Nikita Koloff a title shot!
Bobby Heenan: Are you nuts Ric? This guy is undefeated and a monster! Your title would be in serious jeopardy!
Jim Cornette: You won’t give us the title shot…so we’ll take the title itself until you agree to this bout!
Ken Resnick: Cornette and Koloff have stolen the title belt and are refusing to give it back.
Gordon Solie: No wonder Flair didn’t want to tell his business advisor, Bobby Heenan, what the terms of the deal were with Koloff and Cornette. Although reports are somewhat shaded, we have learned that Nikita Koloff had over 1000 bouts in the Soviet Union and won them all. This man has never been beaten and never been stopped! No wonder Flair was holding off on granting him a world title shot. Heenan knows that if Flair loses the belt, his meal ticket, the money, the fame and the spotlight all go out the window!
Ken Resnick: Well Koloff and Cornette have escaped with the title belt and….oh….my….word….Flair’s problems just doubled.
Lord Humongous: RIC FLAIR…TURN AROUND. YOUR NIGHTMARE IS STANDING ON YOUR SHOULDERS AND YOU ARE ABOUT TO FEEL MY WRATH.
Gordon Solie: What is this? Dusty Rhodes has hopped in the ring and is standing side by side with Lord Humongous. Dusty did state his intentions at going after the AWA World title after his victory tonight. Is this how he is going to introduce himself into the fold?
Lord Humongous: I KNOW YOU WANT TO SEE MY REAL IDENTITY. BUT YOU WILL BE SHOCKED AND DEVASTATED WHEN THIS MASK COMES OFF. YOUR PAST IS ABOUT TO CLASH WITH YOUR PRESENT AND DESTROY YOUR FUTURE!
Ken Resnick: Lord Humongous has taken off the mask and that’s…LEX LUGER!!! He immediately attacks Flair and has him up in his signature Torture Rack submission hold!
Gordon Solie: Lex Luger is a former protégé of Ric Flair who was trained under the guidance of Flair and was tutored early in his career by Flair. Luger ended up becoming a star all over the world but it was without the help of Ric Flair. Everyone wondered what happened between the two and now we see that the repaltionship must not have ended on the best of terms.
Dusty Rhodes: Ric Flair…Four Horsemen. I told you early that there was a major and credible threat coming after your AWA title. The Total Package and the American Dream are here and as a collaborative unit we will take that title from around your waist and put it where it belongs, in the hands of a people’s champion!
Lex Luger: You know we didn’t end on the best of terms Ric. You had to have known that one day I would be back for my revenge. Well, the time is now. Can you feel the walls closing in all around you Ric? It’s time, it’s time for the title to have a new home. The Package and the Dream are going to make that happen here real soon!
Ken Resnick: What a night here at AWA Spectacular folks! So many questions answered tonight, but so many more questions raised! We’ll see you next week on AWA All-Star Wrestling! For Gordon Solie, I am Ken Resnick saying so long from the Superdome here in New Orleans!
