Ken Resnick: Welcome everyone to the beautiful Rosemont Horizon here in Chicago, Illinois as tonight the American Wrestling Association brings to you our pay per view spectacular…When Worlds Collide. Tonight we will have two broadcast teams bringing you a description of the action as over here in ring #1 it will be myself, Ken Resnick, alongside Gorilla Monsoon.
Gorilla Monsoon: And bringing you the call of the action in ring #2 will be Gordon Solie partnering up with Jim Ross.
Ken Resnick: We were told that prior to going on the air tonight there would be an announcement concerning tonight’s main event when Ric Flair defends both the AWA and NWA World titles against the challenge of Harley Race. Let’s go down to the ring and the announcement from the president of the AWA, Stanley Blackburn.
Stanley Blackburn: Hello everyone and welcome to AWA When Worlds Collide. Tonight we have a special main event where both the AWA and NWA World titles will be on the line. After speaking with NWA President Bob Geigel we have come to the following decision. Because there is two rings tonight, if the action spills into ring #1 then we will follow AWA rules with referee Marty Miller in charge. If the action in the main event spills into ring #2 then it will be fought under NWA rules with Billy Duggan refereeing in that ring. Both titles will change hands however if a victor is decided in either ring.
Gorilla Monsoon: That is definitely going to add a layer of strategy for both Ric Flair and Harley Race heading into tonight’s big match.
Gorilla Monsoon: Well, let’s get the action going in ring #1 as we have a battle for the title of “king of professional wrestling” as well as possession of both crowns currently possessed by Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman.
Ken Resnick: Here comes Kaufman down to the ring here at the Rosemont Horizon flanked by his Cabaret of Hollywood Stars which includes, Billy Graham, Gino Hernandez and John Studd.
Ken Resnick: And entering the ring now is the man who I believe is the king of professional wrestling, Jerry Lawler. If Kaufman didn’t make enough of a mockery of the AWA United States title before he was defeated by Bruiser Brody at Wrestlemania, he now has gone as far as creating his own title, a title which Jerry Lawler has taken offense to, the king of professional wrestling.
Gorilla Monsoon: And now we have the face off in the middle of the ring and as customary in a title match, referee Earl Hebner is showing both men the spoils of victory which can be claimed in this match, both of the crowns, Lawler’s crown as well as Kaufman’s crown.
Ken Resnick: And as this match gets under way here goes Andy Kaufman stalling for time. I think he knows that he’s in there with a true competitor tonight. Lawler is not like the challengers we saw Kaufman face during his “Intergalactic Challenge”. Lawler is now practice wrestling dummy or any sort of midget wrestling clown.
Gorilla Monsoon: I have to agree with you here Ken, this is getting ridiculous now. Again, Kaufman has delayed the two locking up as this time it’s Billy Graham giving Andy Kaufman some last minute advice I guess but since he is on the ropes, referee Earl Hebner has no choice but no hold Lawler back and put the count on Kaufman.
Ken Resnick: Ah c’mon now Andy! He won’t get in the ring to lock up with Lawler. He is coming up with every excuse in the book not to get in the ring with him. This is absolutely ridiculous.
Andy Kaufman: I here you over there Mr. Resnick! I have to inspect the ring posts. Have to make sure they are strong enough to support my huge masculine frame. I will not wrestle in a ring that is not up to my standards!
Jerry Lawler: Get over here Andy, I’ll give you a free move…here take a free headlock!
Gorilla Monsoon: Lawler has now resorted to giving a free maneuver to Kaufman just so he can try and get this match started. I can’t blame him for trying and amazingly it looks like the trick has worked as Kaufman has locked onto the hold and we are apparently now under way.
Andy Kaufman: Give it up right now Lawler before I crush your skull and pop it like a pimple!
Ken Resnick: Looks like Andy may be the one that is going to get his skull crushed! Jerry Lawler has reversed the headlock of Andy Kaufman into a back body drop and just sent Andy reeling while landing on the side of his head.
Gorilla Monsoon: He may be knocked out from that maneuver, he’s not moving at all!
Gorilla Monsoon: Looks like Lawler may be making a quick and easy pay day here tonight in Chicago as he is about to dispatch Kaufman in this match with his famous piledriver. We still have seen a man to kick out after he’s been hit with this, so I highly doubt that Andy Kaufman will be the first.
Ken Resnick: But did we expect anything less here? Billy Graham is up on the apron distracting referee Earl Hebner. If I were Lawler I’d just dump Kaufman on his head and get this over with, forget about Graham until after the match…then deck him right upside the head!
Ken Resnick: Wait a second, that’s…Curt Hennig! We saw him turn on his longtime friend and partner, Greg Gagne, a few weeks back on AWA All-Star Wrestling. Hennig said that Gagne had been holding him back all these years and it was time for him to become a superstar. Has he made a deal with the devil and signed a contract with Andy Kaufman’s Cabaret of Hollywood Stars?! Trust me Curt, this guy won’t take you into the stars, he’ll only send you right into the dumpster!
Gorilla Monsoon: Even though Kaufman is groggy and out of it, he still had the sense about him to roll over and put his arm on top of Lawler as referee Earl Hebner is down and we have a three count. I guess that means that the “Kaufman’s King’s Crown Challenge” will now continue, but what a way for him to win. Unbelievable.
Ken Resnick: Oh would you get a look at this? Kaufman is being raised on the shoulders of Graham and Hernandez as he thinks he’s now the triumphant king. In my book, this guy didn’t win a thing…he stole it!
Andy Kaufman: Hear ye, hear ye, thine King Andy has thou arrived. Ye all you peasants of the AWA thou shalt not questions the rulings of thy royal self. When you see thee, ye shall bow beneath me and KISS MY FEET! That’s right all you no good bottom of the barrel fans, I am the king. And I am about to prove that by facing the toughest competition there is in the world today. You think you got what it takes to snatch the crown from the king, well next week, I let the first challengers step up for the “Andy Kaufman King’s Crown Challenge”!
Ken Resnick: And now it’s time to move onto our next match here at When Worlds Collide as we have a grudge tag team match between the Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erichs. We aren’t sure which one of these men for either side is going to be in this match. This will not be a three on three match and will only be two on two. Will it be Buddy, Michael or Terry representing the Fabulous Freebirds in this match?
Gorilla Monsoon: As we get going with the action it will be Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts representing the Fabulous Freebirds and it will be Kerry and Mike Von Erich opposing them in the opposite corner.
Ken Resnick: Terry Gordy showing us his power here as he picks up Mike Von Erich for a big atomic drop. The feud between these two sides has raged on for years and just now we are seeing it boil over in the AWA.
Ken Resnick: It always seems that no matter who is representing the Fabulous Freebirds team that there is always a cohesive strength amongst those members. While Gordy makes the tag in to Buddy Roberts, they take advantage of the referee’s five count to do some major work on Mike Von Erich.
Gorilla Monsoon: And this is definitely the game that the Fabulous Freebirds love to play. Buddy Roberts toying with Mike Von Erich making him think that he’s got a shot at making the tag to his brother Kerry only to deliver a boot to the back of Mike’s head at the last moment. I can’t stand to see competitors do that to their opponents. Show some respect here Buddy!
Ken Resnick: Buddy Roberts and the Fabulous Freebirds team seem to have complete control over this match as Roberts now has Mike lined up for a side slam. Mike really needs to make a tag to his brother or this match will be over quick and it will have been a match completely dominated by the Fabulous Freebirds.
Gorilla Monsoon: After many months mired in a losing streak, the Von Erichs seemed to have had the ship righted last week and were well on their way to the AWA World Tag Titles before the Fabulous Freebirds stuck their nose in Von Erich business. If the Von Erich’s were out to get some sort of revenge on the Freebirds tonight, the Freebirds have had so much control in this match that they sure aren’t giving them a chance to pay them back for costing the titles last week.
Ken Resnick: Could we be seeing a Von Erich come back here? Mike has miraculously risen to his feet and is able to drive the head of Terry Gordy hard into the turnbuckle with that turnbuckle smash. Now is the time for Mike to get the tag he so desperately needs to Kerry!
Gorilla Monsoon: All too many times we have seen this become the pivotal moment in a tag team contest. Both me down, both men out, both men with their arms stretched out desperately searching for the tag to their fresh partner. Usually it’s the one that gets the tag first that gets a massive advantage over their opponents in this situation.
Ken Resnick: And it’s the Von Erich team getting the tag first and Kerry enters the ring like a ball of fire as he unloads on Buddy Roberts with a series of left and rights followed by his patented and ever so powerful discus punch!
Gorilla Monsoon: Kerry Von Erich is one of the strongest men I have ever come across in my many years of professional wrestling and because of that massive amount of strength, we can here Buddy Roberts screaming in pain as Kerry Von Erich has both of his arms pinned behind his back in a sort of full nelson like maneuver here.
Ken Resnick: And like a scared person running off to safety, Buddy Roberts has fallen into the arms of Michael Hayes.
Gorilla Monsoon: I’m not sure why Hayes is even up on the apron. He’s not even in this match, it’s only supposed to be Roberts and Gordy! Where is referee Danny Davis to get him down from there?!
Gorilla Monsoon: Forget about Danny Davis now Ken! Kerry Von Erich has decided to do the dirty work himself and has leaped from the top rope and into the waiting laps of Hayes and Roberts!
Ken Resnick: I don’t think Buddy Roberts quite knows what happened as he has a quite bewildered look on his face as what is this, Kerry Von Erich is using a backslide on Buddy Roberts with the use of his legs and feet.
Gorilla Monsoon: Referee Danny Davis is down and position as he slams his hand to the mat three times and we have a upset victory as Kerry and Mike Von Erich have pulled a fast one over the Fabulous Freebirds team of Buddy Roberts and Terry Gordy!
Ken Resnick: I don’t think Buddy Roberts has ever found himself in a pinning predicament quite like the one he just found himself in and I don’t think he knows quite what to make of the pinfall loss he just suffered.
Gorilla Monsoon: Something tells me that with the look on the face of Michael Hayes after that loss that we have not heard the last of this situation between the Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erichs.
Ken Resnick: we are going to throw it over to our colleagues in ring #2, Jim Ross and Gordon Solie as next up is the AWA World Tag Team title match as AWA When Worlds Collide continues!
Gordon Solie: Thank you very much Mr. Resnick and Mr. Monsoon as we are over here in ring #2 for the AWA World Tag Team title match. Already in the ring are the challengers, Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask as they are getting some last minute instructions from the referee assigned to this contest, Scrappy McGowan.
Jim Ross: And now entering the ring are the AWA World Tag Team champions, “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers. This match all stemmed from comments that Rose made a couple weeks ago after Dynamite Kid defeated Tiger Mask in a classic of a match for the WWF Jr. Heavyweight championship. Rose stated that there is no place in professional wrestling for junior heavyweight wrestlers and that they should step aside for guys like Rose and Somers. Dynamite Kid countered last week saying that there was no place in professional wrestling like an out of shape guy like Rose and laid down the challenge to prove who was right in the argument. We’ll see who is right in this match, Rose of Dynamite.
Gordon Solie: Right now to start off the match it is quickly advantage Dynamite as he uses his quickness and speed to catch Somers in a head scissors and take him down to the mat.
Jim Ross: Dynamite is no push over as he has held numerous titles around the world including in his home land of England, Canada as well as Japan. If Rose and Somers take these guys too lightly, they may pay the price, like paying the price of losing the AWA World Tag Team titles.
Jim Ross: I am not quite sure if Doug Somers knows what’s hitting him right now. Dynamite Kid is coming down with blow after blow in quick succession on one half of the tag team champions and the speed of the Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask team may be able to overcome the age and experience of Rose and Somers. Dynamite connects with a massive dropkick that sends Doug Somers reeling into the ropes.
Gordon Solie: We are seeing more quickness and highflying maneuvers here from Dynamite and Tiger Mask. A quick tag brings Tiger Mask into the match and they use the tag out to score a double team move on Doug Somers as Tiger Mask springboards off the top rope and connects with an elbow to Somers as Dynamite Kid had Somers perched up on top of his shoulders in a backbreaker like position.
Gordon Solie: I think the “Pretty Boy” has had enough as he goes flopping over to the corner to get the tag out to his partner the “Playboy” Buddy Rose.
Jim Ross: Buddy Rose is the bigger of the two in the team so we’ll see is his size and weight advantage can counter the speed advantage that Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask have already exploited in this match.
Buddy Rose: Excuse me Ross, the BIGGER of the two?! What’s that supposed to mean? I am one of the buffest, trimmest, most good looking men in professional wrestling today. What’s your little info sheet there say for my weight?
Jim Ross: It says 271 pounds….
Buddy Rose: What?! What?! Who puts these info sheets together?! It’s 217 pounds, now get it right and make sure to tell everyone here at the Rosemont Horizon and on pay per view watching at home that it’s 217 pounds!
Jim Ross: Excuse me, fans of Chicago and pay per view viewers around the world, can I have your attention please. Mr. Rose has informed me that he believes the AWA info sheet I was handed is incorrect. Mr. Rose says he weighs in tonight at 217 pounds…NOT 271 pounds. Please excuse the AWA for the “supposed” incorrect information.
Gordon Solie: Tiger Mask has had enough of listening to Buddy Rose babble on about things not relative to the matter at hand…the match, as he drops Buddy Rose with a dropkick of his own and we better watch it here Jim as it looks as though the action is about to land right in our laps. You know how the old saying goes, if it looks like the action is coming your way, it probably is!
Jim Ross: The 271 pound frame of Buddy Rose has come crashing down on our announcer’s desk after that dropkick by Tiger Mask.
Buddy Rose: I heard that Ross! How many times do I have to tell you that it’s 217 pounds?!
Jim Ross: Buddy Rose has made his way back into the ring and as referee Scrappy McGowan has his back turned to make sure we are ok after Rose’s fall to the outside, Buddy takes advantage and has five fingers raking into the mask and eyes of Tiger Mask. For all the speed that you can show against Rose and Somers, I guess sometimes that can’t counter to old fashioned dirty tactics of a couple of wily veterans like Rose and Somers.
Gordon Solie: This is the type of match that falls right into Buddy Rose’s favor. A slow and methodical match where Buddy can use rest holds like this single leg Boston crab in order to catch his breath and get ready for the next onslaught of quick and fast paced moves that Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask are going to throw at him.
Jim Ross: I have to give it to Buddy strategy wise here as well as a majority of the moves that are in the arsenal of guys like Dynamite and Tiger Mask consist of using their legs. If you weaken a knee like his is doing now to Tiger Mask, it takes away a great deal of their offensive fire power.
Jim Ross: Buddy continues his onslaught in attacking key parts of the body for those offensive moves. Here Rose has Tiger Mask in a front face lock which he uses to then drive him down face first into the mat. Rose is one of the best strategist I think that has ever come along in the world of professional wrestling.
Jim Ross: It looks like Rose and Somers have had enough in this argument of who wins out between youth and experience. They’ve got Tiger Mask set up and connect with their “Ugly Face Killer” double team move and it looks like this match is in the books after that one.
Gordon Solie: Doug Somers making the pin on Tiger Mask as Buddy Rose cuts off Dynamite Kid at the pass to make sure there is no question that this is it for this contest.
Jim Ross: Referee Scrappy McGowan is down and we have a three count as retaining their AWA World Tag Team Championship is the team of “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers.
Jim Ross: The young guns of Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask just don’t seem to have what it takes to beat Rose and Somers on this night. Possibly with a little more training, strength training and some in ring experience against crafty ring veterans like those two, they’ll be able to capture the AWA World Tag Titles in the very near future. But until then, Rose and Somers are still the tag champions. We’ll be right back after the intermission for the big double ring, double cage match!
Gorilla Monsoon:Gorilla Monsoon back here in ring #1 with Ken Resnick as we will have the call of the action here as the Snake Pit team of Jake Roberts, Dick Murdoch, One Man Gang and King Kong Bundy take on the patchwork team that only just came together last week on AWA All-Star Wrestling which consists of Dusty Rhodes, Bruiser Brody, Roddy Piper and Andre the Giant. Ken, would you mind explaining the rules for this very unusual match.
Ken Resnick: All eight men will start the match off and are free to fight in either of the two rings. The winning team will be decided when the other four members of the opposing side have all been eliminated. Wrestlers will be eliminated by normal pinfall, submission or knockout and must leave the ring immediately. This surly promises to be a very violent affair.
Gorilla Monsoon: Jake Roberts does not seem too eager to enter the cage and who can blame him? Dusty Rhodes has been locked in a violent feud with Roberts over the past few months and he knows there is nowhere for Roberts to run and there is no wear for Roberts to hide inside the confines of the double ring steel cage. At some point in this match, Roberts is going to have to face his biggest nightmare in the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.
Ken Resnick: The action in this one is starting out fast and furious as that showdown that Gorilla just eluded to didn’t take long to happen as Dusty Rhodes greets Jake Roberts at the door to the cage with a giant punch to the side of the head. This is the moment that Dusty has been waiting for, the moment to get Jake in a cage where he cannot run, and Dusty is going to take full advantage of it.
Gorilla Monsoon: The action in both rings is hot and heavy right now as this blood feud has reached a whole entire other level which we thought we would never see in an AWA ring. Roddy Piper is playing the bagpipes on Bundy’s head and Andre the Giant is playing the guitar on One Man Gang’s head!
Ken Resnick: If you don’t think that Bruiser Brody has high stakes in this match, think again. Brody has been great friends and allies with Dick Murdoch for years now. So how do you think he felt when Murdoch betrayed Dusty and went over to the dark side of the Snake Pit? Brody is showing Murdoch just how he feels right now as he delivers a shot to the gut with that ladder hoping to soften him up and eliminate him from this match.
Gorilla Monsoon: I think One Man Gang has had enough of this match and he is trying to scale the side of the cage to escape. I hope our AWA ring crew did a good enough job to secure the cage or the whole thing might collapse from the weight of One Man Gang.
Ken Resnick: Not so fast on escaping the cage there One Man Gang, Andre the Giant uses his towering height advantage to grab the ankles of One Man Gang so that he’s not able to escape the cage. The Gang has put himself in a perilous position here for elimination with those tables sitting behind him.
Gorilla Monsoon: With a crashing thud through the table, One Man Gang has been dropped through the table and chair contraption that was set up by Andre the Giant as it looks like the Snake Pit is about to be at a three vs. four disadvantage.
Ken Resnick: Referee Danny Davis is stationed in ring #2 as he is there to count three on the pretty lackadaisical cover by Andre the Giant. One Man Gang is the first man eliminated from this match.
Gorilla Monsoon: Andre better watch it himself or he’s going to be the next man to be eliminated from this match. King Kong Bundy with a sneak attack job on Andre has Andre on wobbly legs looking pretty worse for the wear.
Ken Resnick: With Andre reeling from that Bundy chair shot, Bundy now takes the opportunity to line up Roddy Piper for the Avalanche splash in the corner. And if a normal Bundy Avalanche wasn’t enough, he’s got Piper got in the corner with a ladder! This will almost definitely break the ribs of Roddy Piper.
Gorilla Monsoon: Referee Danny Davis is down and King Kong Bundy has evened up the sides at three a piece after that Avalanche in the corner has knocked Roddy Piper out of this match.
Ken Resnick: Wait, should he be? Can he? Will he? I sure do hope we were right in that the AWA ring crew reinforced this cage for the extra weight of these half ton wrestlers!
Gorilla Monsoon: I have never seen this before. But I guess in order to eliminate a “giant” like Andre you have to take a “giant” risk and hope that it pays off! Bundy is climbing to the very top of the cage. Will he be able to connect with this extremely high risk maneuver?
Gorilla Monsoon: This is like poetry in motion watch King Kong Bundy fall from the sky. Gravity is about to take hold and I think gravity is about to inflict a whole lot of punishment on Andre the Giant.
Ken Resnick: King Kong Bundy has perhaps scored the upset of his career here as he has just pinned Andre the Giant! Unbelievable! I didn’t think anyone would be able to ever pin Andre. I knew it would take a special circumstance for it to happen, but I never dreamed it would take King Kong Bundy flying off the top of a steel cage to have Andre’s shoulders counted down to the mat for a three count.
Gorilla Monsoon: Hold on a minute here, I think that splash from the top of the cage took everything he had out of Bundy. He’s out cold! Bruiser Brody has snuck over to cage #2 and has pinned the unconscious King Kong Bundy.
Ken Resnick: Right when we thought that the Snake Pit had taken a huge three on two advantage, we are now down to the final four as it’s Rhodes and Brody vs. Roberts and Murdoch!
Gorilla Monsoon: Dusty has had enough of this as he goes right after Roberts again and slams him hard down on a wooden board that has been laid out in the middle of the ring. Dusty would like nothing more than to score a victory over the Snake Pit and especially Jake Roberts!
Ken Resnick: There goes Brody lining Roberts up for the big running knee drop that he finishes opponents off with…..
Gorilla Monsoon: ….meanwhile Dusty Rhodes has grabbed Jake’s mystical club and I think he’s trying to reverse the mystical trance that Roberts originally had put on Murdoch to get him to join the Snake Pit in the first place! Could we see the old loveable Dick Murdoch back and reunited with Dusty Rhodes?
Ken Resnick: Ah thank goodness! What a moment! Dusty has reversed the spell on Dick Murdoch and Dick looks to be back to his normal self again as he is now hugging Rhodes and Brody in the ring as they celebrate like long lost friends that hasn’t seen each other in years.
Gorilla Monsoon: The reunion between the three has been short lived as Jake Roberts attacks with possibly the most dangerous weapon there is, the spool of barbwire as he grates it across the head of Dick Murdoch! Jake is not finished by a longshot in this match even though he is now in there all by himself after the trance was reversed on Dick Murdoch!
Ken Resnick: Wait no! Will Dusty fall for this? Jake is chanting a spell on Dusty Rhodes and Dusty has the sheep’s follower mask on! Is Jake trying to convert Dusty over to the ways of the Snake Pit? Of all people, we though the strength and spirit of the American Dream could never be over taken by the magical spells of Jake Roberts and his mystical club!
[
b]Gorilla Monsoon: [/b]A double chair noggin knocker by Murdoch and Brody to Roberts! Did they stop Roberts in time so that Dusty didn’t fall under the spell of Jake though?!
Ken Resnick: Brody makes the winners official in this match as he pins Roberts after the double chair noggin knocker. But I am concerned for the wellbeing of Dusty Rhodes. Murdoch is over there in the corner trying to get Dusty to snap out of the trance but it seems to be having no effect. I am afraid that Dusty has fallen under the spell of Jake Roberts!
Gorilla Monsoon: I am afraid you are right Ken. Jake Roberts is outside of the cage and the screams from Brody and Murdoch seem to have no effect on Dusty snapping out of this trance. Jake keeps calling Dusty’s name and he is following Jake out of the cage! In a match that was supposed to answer all the questions, we now have just even more questions! Is Dusty now a follower of Jake Roberts and the Snake Pit? We’ll hope to have more on this situation next week on AWA All-Star Wrestling. Coming up next is our main event as Ric Flair defends the AWA and NWA World Heavyweight titles against the challenge of once proud but now shunned former member of the Four Horsemen, Harley Race. We’ll be back in just a few moments with that big main event.
Ken Resnick: Here we go with the one we’ve all been waiting for, the one that has been brewing for months, the one that has titles, money and prestige surrounding it. Ric Flair defends the AWA and NWA World Heavyweight titles against the challenge of Harley Race. Remember special rules have been installed for this match. In ring #1 the match will follow with AWA rules with referee Marty Miller officiating. In ring #2 it is referee Billy Duggan following along with the NWA rules. However, it does not matter what ring the pinfall or submission takes place in, both titles can change hands in either ring.
Gorilla Monsoon: The bad blood between these two has been bubbling between these two since all the way back at AWA War Games. It all started with Ric Flair’s quest to gain the AWA World title from Stan Hanson. Flair thought he had a perfect opportunity to defeat Stan Hanson in the War Games cage match only to have Harley Race inadvertently cost him that chance at the title. Shortly thereafter, Flair and his other allies in the Four Horsemen kicked Harley Race out of the group pretty violently I might add and replaced him with Tully Blanchard. Harley Race made it his mission to take out every one of the Four Horsemen by piledriving them in the most violent ways you can think of to injure their necks. One by one, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard and Barry Windham were all put down. Flair has no one else left to protect his back. That’s where the $10,000 bounty comes into play however as Flair has offered it to any one that can put Race out of action by piledriving him and injuring his neck. The layers of intrigue in this match are many in what should make for a very exciting and suspenseful match.
Ken Resnick: It’s Harley Race that gets this match started in a big way as he connects to the face of Ric Flair with a straight right hand into the champ’s nose.
Gorilla Monsoon: Flair can definitely not afford to take too many of those shots from Race. Harley Race is known for having one of the hardest hitting punches in the world of professional wrestling today.
Gorilla Monsoon: That sure didn’t take long for things to spill to the outside of the ring as Harley Race drives Ric Flair’s head hard into those solid steel ring steps. There all sorts of sharp edges in that metal and Flair could easily be busted open after taking that blow.
Ken Resnick: Flair and Race are two of the best technical wrestlers in professional wrestling. But after seeing this match spill to the outside so quickly, the bad blood has overtaken the technical wrestling and the predictions of some that we were going to see a technical masterpiece between these two has been thrown right out the window.
Jim Ross: Now this is where things could get interesting as this is Jim Ross and Gordon Solie now calling the action as the brawl between Flair and Race has now spilled over into ring #2. Remember in this ring, the match is being fought under NWA rules.
Gordon Solie: Yes Jim, that is correct. A few variances are in the NWA rule book as opposed to the AWA rule book. Most importantly for these two men, jumping off the top rope or throwing your opponent over the top rope will earn them a disqualification and they will have blown their opportunity at winning this match.
Gordon Solie: Now it’s Ric Flair firing back at Harley Race with a right of his own, very similar to what we saw in ring #1. It’s almost as if the AWA ring as Harley Race’s space and now the NWA ring is where Flair is going to take control of the match.
Jim Ross: Just as Gordon alluded to, it seems we are indeed seeing a mirror image of the two rings! Flair has taken the action to the outside and has driven Race this time into the solid steel steps.
Gordon Solie: A little bit of a variation however as to what Race did with the steps and what Flair is doing now. Flair has picked Race up and given him a bodyslam onto the steps. Much like Race has done to all of the Horsemen, perhaps it is Flair trying to injure the neck and back of Race.
Gordon Solie: And here we go! The move that has made the “Nature Boy” famous around the globe, the Figure Four!
Jim Ross: I am not too sure that Flair has Race weakened up enough to get him in this hold. Flair has not worked over the leg of Race at all and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not able to get a submission out of this especially in a high stakes match such as this one.
Gordon Solie: You were right Jim, Flair didn’t have Race weakened up enough as he kicks Flair in the back as he turned his back in hooking up the Figure Four…but NWA official Billy Duggan has been knocked down as well as Flair’s momentum sent him flying into Duggan and has knocked the referee silly!
Jim Ross: AWA official Marty Miller has jumped over from ring #1 as his referee cohort Billy Duggan is down after being run into by Flair!
Gordon Solie: Meanwhile, Race has Flair hooked up for a double underhook back suplex. We’ve seen Race in the past use this move as a sneak attack and in a very sly manner catch his opponents off guard and score the three count on them!
Gordon Solie: The back suplex by Race connects! I think we are going to have a new AWA and NWA World Champion!
Jim Ross: Billy Duggan has recovered, he’s counting to three, Marty Miller is counting to three! What’s going on here?! We’ve got two three counts by two different referees! Who’s the winner? Flair? Race? Both? Neither? We need an official ruling down here in the ring! The scene here at the Rosemont Horizon is nuts as the fans are as lost as we are, who won the match?!
Gordon Solie: What is this now? AWA official Marty Miller has raised the hand of Ric Flair in victory and is awarding him the AWA World Heavyweight title belt!
Jim Ross: Meanwhile on the other side of the ring, NWA referee Billy Duggan is raising Harley Race’s hand in victory and is awarding him the NWA World Heavyweight title belt!
Gordon Solie: I am sure glad we have both AWA President Stanley Blackburn as well as NWA President Bob Geigel in attendance tonight in Chicago so that this whole situation can get straightened out.
Gordon Solie: Tense moments here, possible career defining moments here are being discussed by AWA President Blackburn and NWA President Geigel in the middle of the ring. What will the ever so important decision turn out to be?
Stanley Blackburn: After careful consideration between myself and Mr. Geigel, we have decided that the current decision of both referees will stand. The referee can only judge for himself what he sees. AWA official Marty Miller saw Flair’s shoulder up and Race’s down. NWA official Billy Duggan saw Race’s shoulder up and Flair’s down. Therefore this match has two winners. Ric Flair is STILL the AWA World Heavyweight champion, however, Harley Race is the NEW NWA World Heavyweight champion!
Jim Ross: What an unbelievable and unprecedented decision by Blackburn and Geigel!
Gordon Solie: It looks as though this is it, time to finally bury the hatchet between these two, admit their mistakes and move on.
Jim Ross: This is what the AWA should all be about. A mix of great competition and sportsmanship putting on these great matches for the fans and showing you the greatest professional wrestling in the world today!
Gordon Solie: A great line that you just said Jim, unfortunately, it has all gone out the window! Who is this man attacking the new NWA World Champ Harley Race? It appears that he has a shirt on that says USSR, is this man a Russian invader coming into the AWA?
Jim Ross: But look who is with him! That’s Jim Cornette! He said he was bringing a group into to take over the AWA, could this man possibly be the first to join sides with Cornette?
Gordon Solie: I’m getting word now that it is Nikita Koloff!
Jim Ross: Listen to Cornette screaming instructions at Koloff!
Jim Cornette: The table! The table! Give him a piledriver through the table!
Gordon Solie: Hold on a minute here, could Cornette and Koloff be out here to collect the $10,000 bounty that Ric Flair has placed on the head of Harley Race?
Jim Ross: Oh geez! What a sickening sound listening to Harley Race’s head bounce off the concrete of the Rosemont Horizon! Harley Race has got to have the neck injury that Ric Flair was seeking to pay out that $10,000 after that piledriver through our announce table on Harley Race!
Jim Ross: Oh no, you’ve got to be kidding me! They were here for the bounty money! Bobby Heenan is handing over the Halliburton briefcase containing the $10,000 to Jim Cornette! Cornette has made an impact here in the AWA by coming on the scene, unleashing Nikita Koloff on the AWA and collecting $10,000 after injuring the now NWA champ Harley Race!
Gordon Solie: We’ll hope to have more information on this situation next week on AWA All-Star Wrestling, but until then good night everyone as we leave you here at AWA When Worlds Collide![/font]
