Ken Resnick: Welcome everyone to the Scope here in Norfolk, Virginia as tonight we bring you another exciting edition of AWA All-Star Wrestling! We’ve got a couple of great matches lined up for you as we inch closer to AWA Southwest Shootout in just a couple weeks’ time. Tonight we’re going to get things started with a special edition of Roddy Piper in Pipers Pit.
Roddy Piper: The Hot Rod is back in Pipers Pit and boy do I have a good one here for ya tonight. Here he comes down to the Pit right now.
8
Roddy Piper: Here he is folks, the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair! He is coming to the Pit tonight with the business advisor to the Four Horsemen, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.
Roddy Piper: Welcome to Pipers Pit champ, how ya been?
Ric Flair: How have I been?! How have I been?! I’ll tell you how I’ve been. I got a Russian terror breathing down my neck on one side and a man who I thought was long gone and out of my life on the other side breathing down my neck.
Roddy Piper: Could you tell us what the association between Luger and yourself is?
Ric Flair: Lex Luger is nothing but a big, dumb, muscle head that I helped get into professional wrestling. He thought he was a bigger star than me and he needed to be knocked down a notch or two. So I did what I needed to do and got rid of him. Last I knew, he couldn’t cut it without me backing him and he had quit professional wrestling. Now all of a sudden I’m told he’d been wrestling in other promotions and was bust biding his time until he could come back and challenge me.
Roddy Piper: What about Nikita Koloff? We found out that you owe him a title shot?
Ric Flair: I don’t owe him a thing. He got his $10,000 from the bounty on Harley Race and that was it. Nothing more was owed. If he wants a title shot he’ll just have to step in line like all the others to get one.
Jim Cornette: Excuse me? Step in line? We got a fast pass through that line straight to the top of the heap when you guaranteed Nikita a title shot! You can’t go back on your word now.
Ric Flair: I don’t see anything in writing Cornette. Without anything in writing, then it’s nothing. The deal never existed without a signed contract saying so.
Jim Cornette: Of course you’d use legal red tape to wiggle your way out of a title shot. That’s why I went to the AWA Board of Directors and was able to get one. You say that Nikita needs to earn his title shot and wait in line? That’s exactly what he’s going to do, earn his title shot. Next week here on AWA All-Star Wrestling, there will be a #1 contender’s match with the winner facing you at AWA Southwest Shootout. I have Nikita from my side and let Stanley Blackburn choose his opponent, who I have been told is none other than Lex Luger!
Ken Resnick: Major fireworks going off here on Pipers Pit this week. It’s a lose-lose situation for Ric Flair in this one! Next week Lex Luger meets Nikita Koloff with the #1 contenders spot on the line! Flair doesn’t want to face either, but he will in a few weeks in San Antonio! We’ll be right back after these messages.
Ken Resnick: Again? Who keeps letting Kaufman have the mic?
Andy Kaufman: Apparently, I sent some shockwaves throughout the AWA last week and apparently ruffled the feathers of some when I sold the contract of Gino Hernandez to Eddie Gilbert of Hot Stuff International. I still even with this departure think we are still a force to be reckoned with. I don’t care who I upset with my business decisions. I am from Hollywood, I am super intelligent, and I know what I’m doing!
Gordon Solie: I think he may have ruffled the wrong feathers last week. As you can see Billy Graham seems distant from the rest of the group here in the corner near us. He voiced his displeasure over the departure of Gino Hernandez last week. Billy has been with Andy Kaufman since the very beginning and has been loyal to him through all these highs and lows over the past.
Andy Kaufman: Now, it is not time for another edition of the King’s Crown Challenge. What peasant will be destroyed this week!
Gordon Solie: That’s Bearcat Wright again. We saw him a few weeks ago challenge Kaufman a few weeks ago and come so close to taking the crown before Billy Graham interfered in that match to save the crown for Kaufman yet again.
Andy Kaufman: No. Nope. Notta. Not going to happen. Apparently, you have not read the rule book of the King’s Crown Challenge. No repeat challengers, sorry buddy, next challenger please!
Ken Resnick: Here comes Jerry Lawler down to ringside now as it was his crown that Kaufman pretty much stole from him.
Jerry Lawler: What’s the matter Andy? You are all big and bad and when somebody comes along and gives you a run for your money you won’t give them another shot? What kind of king is that?
Andy Kaufman: Don’t you dare question my title as the king!
Jerry Lawler: Prove you’re the king then and give Bearcat Wright another shot at the title then.
Andy Kaufman: Let me think….no!!!
Jerry Lawler: You’ve left us no other choice then.
Ken Resnick: Jerry Lawler and Bearcat wright have hit the ring and are attacking Studd and Hennig. They are trying to take down everything in their way to get their hands on Kaufman.
Gordon Solie: Something strange is going on with Billy Graham here. As soon as the attack on his stable mates started, he jumped out of the ring and is watching the action instead of helping out at all.
Ken Resnick: Uh oh, Andy has been backed into the corner by Lawler and Bearcat. He may be in for the beating of his life.
Gordon Solie: Billy Graham has jumped back into the ring and is standing in between Kaufman and that beating of a life time. Looks like he’s going to help Kaufman out after all like he has so many times before.
Billy Graham: Not this time Andy.
Gordon Solie: Is this really happening? Is Superstar Billy Graham walking out on Andy Kaufman?
Ken Resnick: He’s left Andy high and dry and is being sent to the wolves, also known as Jerry Lawler and Bearcat Wright!
Gordon Solie: Is Billy Graham having second thoughts about what he just did? He and Andy have been together since the very beginning here in the AWA!
Ken Resnick: He doesn’t seem to be mounting much resistance to the whole thing as Bearcat Wright and Graham are just staring at each other.
Gordon Solie: Well, doesn’t look like Superstar Graham will be saving the day for Andy this time as Lawler just spiked Andy hard into the mat with his famous piledriver!
Gordon Solie: Superstar Graham has turned his back on Andy Kaufman and is heading to the locker rooms here in the Scope! I don’t think he’s having any second thoughts about what he just did in turning his back.
Ken Resnick: As much as I don’t care for Andy Kaufman, somebody better get down there real quick and check on him. He seems to be lying motionless on the mat and may not be in the best of shape at the moment.
Gordon Solie: Some scary moments here as I don’t believe I have seen Kaufman move a muscle after getting dropped right on top of his head after that Jerry Lawler piledriver.
Ken Resnick: The two remaining members of the Cabaret of Hollywood Stars in Studd and Hennig have brought out a stretcher and are carrying Kaufman to the back. We will hope to have a update on his condition soon.
Kerry Von Erich: For a long time now, the Fabulous Freebirds have been carrying around that Freebird Hair Cream and blinding people. First it was the Junkyard Dog and now it’s my father, Fritz Von Erich. They think that they’re something alright blinding people and causing what could possibly be permanent damage to their eyes. I hope you guys are proud, real proud of what you have done. Things got even worst last week when they turned the lights off in the locker room and tried to attack us in the dark. If it wasn’t for my brother Dave, who knows what might have happened. Tonight, I have a contract to wrestle a match here on AWA All-Star Wrestling and there’s no set of men that I want to square off with more right now than one of the Freebirds. So get your butt down here and let’s get this thing going!
Ken Resnick: Perhaps not Kerry’s first choice to answer the challenge that he just laid down as it the big bruiser of the Fabulous Freebirds and what I guess you could say is their hit man, Terry Gordy. We should have quite a contest here as referee Jerry Calhoun is hurrying his way down to the ring to get this match under way.
Gordon Solie: Always the aggressor, Terry Gordy is trying to make short work of Kerry here tonight as he drops an elbow smash to the face and sends the young Texan reeling.
Gordon Solie: Terry Gordy is a student of the game and I am being told that he apparently picked this move up while on a tour of Japan. Gordy is calling it his “Head Drop Suplex” where quite literally he drops the opponent straight on the back of his head. A very dangerous move and one that could end careers in an instant.
Ken Resnick: The power game of Terry Gordy is on display here as he has Kerry Von Erich up in a standing full nelson.
Gordon Solie: This is amazing that Gordy has such strength that he can lift a rather large man like Kerry straight off the mat but still have the power to keep him locked in that full nelson.
Gordon Solie: This match has been all Terry Gordy since the get go as he is using every square inch of the wrestling ring as he now drives Kerry’s head into the turnbuckle.
Ken Resnick: That is only a thin piece of cloth over the metal buckle that holds the ropes in place. You know Kerry has got to be seeing stars after that blow by Gordy.
Gordon Solie: The fighting spirit of Kerry Von Erich is telling him to never give up! He has fought his way back in this match and has Gordy up for a delay suplex.
Ken Resnick: We talked about the power of Gordy, how about the power of Kerry? You’ve got to be a powerful man to be able to hold Gordy up there for as long as Kerry is right now.
Ken Resnick: The Iron Claw has been applied and Jerry Calhoun is right in there asking Terry if he’d like to give it up.
Gordon Solie: Just as we suspected might happen, there’s Michael Hayes up on the ring apron trying to distract the referee from doing his job and trying to distract Kerry from his attention on Terry Gordy.
Ken Resnick: Out of nowhere, Kevin Von Erich has rushed the ring and delivered a drop kick to Michael Hayes knocking him off the apron!
Gordon Solie: I don’t believe that should warrant a disqualification in this match from Jerry Calhoun since Kevin never came near close to striking Terry Gordy. But most importantly, this has allowed Kerry to keep the Iron Claw on Terry Gordy. Gordy has submitted to the Iron Claw!
Ken Resnick: What a win for Kerry Von Erich after being pummeled pretty much that entire match. The Iron Claw gives Kerry the victory over Terry Gordy. I think Gordy is in a bit of shock on the outside but as we all know, this feud between the two sides is very far from being over. We’ll be right back!
Eddie Gilbert: The stress, the aggravation, I am not sure I can deal with it all anymore. Rick Rude and Jimmy Garvin have cost me money, riches and fame. When you take those things away from Hot Stuff, you know there will be a steep price to pay. Now I heard Rick Rude say he had s special announcement to make down here tonight. Where is he? I am waiting, I need to hurry up and get that money earned back for the investors of Hot Stuff International. So let’s make it quick Rude!
Rick Rude: Eddie, I do have a special announcement to make, but I am going to hold off a few minutes on that. Eddie, can’t we be in agreement that it was more than a disagreement between the two of us? You know what there are two other people that are more responsible for the down fall of Hot Stuff International and the banishment of the Ravishing One. Jimmy Garvin and Precious screwed us both. Precious messed with our love lives and Jimmy Garvin messed with our in ring livelihood. We need to make those two pay.
Eddie Gilbert: Yea, I agree, but that doesn’t take you off the hook Rude!
Jimmy Garvin: I hear you two complaining and I am frankly getting sick of it. What is this all about?
Rick Rude: Well, my big announcement is that I have setup a match for AWA Southwest Shootout. A triangle tag team match. Gilbert and Hernandez vs. the Garvins vs. Rude and Parsons.
Jimmy Garvin: Oh that’s all fine and dandy by me, it’ll just get me closer to a title shot and I’ll be able to get some enjoyment out of beating you two up along the way.
Eddie Gilbert: Hold on a second. A match? That’s it? No, no, the stakes need to be higher than that. Garvin, I am sick of you, Rude, I am sick of you. This has all got to come to an end. At AWA Southwest Shootout let’s make it the ultimate high stakes match. The loser of the fall must leave the AWA FOREVER! I am not talking about this gone for 30 or 60 days stuff. I am talking about forever as in NEVER SEEN IN THE AWA EVER AGAIN!
Jimmy Garvin: We’re willing to accept those stakes just to get one of you out of here.
Rick Rude: It’s on, but let me just say, Gilbert, Garvin, one of you is going to be packing their bags…permanently!
Ken Resnick: What a match that has just been signed for AWA Southwest Shootout! A triangle tag team match where the loser of the fall leaves the AWA FOREVER!!! We’ll be right back after these messages!
Ken Resnick: Next up we have a special tag team challenge match. A couple of newcomers to the AWA each team up with a couple of veterans looking to get their name back in title conversation. The debuting Chris Adams from England teams up with Nick Bockwinkel to take on up and coming young star Terry Taylor as he sides with “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff.
Gordon Solie: The two wrestlers making their AWA debuts tonight are the ones who start it off here with Chris Adams locked in a test of strength with Terry Taylor.
Ken Resnick: Both Adams and Taylor look to have similar builds, similar strengths and almost look to be a carbon copy of each other.
Gordon Solie: The pace is quickening here as both men are bouncing off the ropes. It’s a criss cross, who’s going to stop?! Terry Taylor goes over Adams and…
Gordon Solie: It’s Terry Taylor that stops and he pays for it with a giant dropkick from Chris Adams!
Gordon Solie: Adams looking for the arm drag take down here but Terry Taylor blocks it and pops right up to his feet.
Ken Resnick: These guys are going hold for hold with each other and the crowd is just eating this action up. I think the AWA is on to something after signing these guys to contracts, they are exciting to watch!
Gordon Solie: This match is at a stalemate as both Adams and Taylor back into their respective corners. The crowd here in Norfolk roars in approval as these two have just put on a wrestling clinic for the past few minutes. I don’t think I have seen such an exciting sequence of moves in years by two men.
Ken Resnick: Both Adams and Taylor tag out and it’s time to give Bockwinkel and Orndorff a chance to see if they can top what those two just did.
Ken Resnick: Bockwinkel and Orndorff are in a stale mate themselves here as Nick backs him into the ropes. We’ll have to see if we can get a clean break out of both men to keep with the momentum of this great match we are seeing this week on AWA All-Star Wrestling.
Gordon Solie: That was far from a clean break as Orndorff and Bockwinkel have spilled out to the floor of the Norfolk Scope. This definitely is not what we wanted to see after Adams and Taylor had such an exciting match going.
Ken Resnick: Nick and Paul better watch it before they get counted out. Referee Danny Davis is up to 8 out of 10 counts as Adams and Taylor are left wondering in the ring how this match went off the rails so bad.
Gordon Solie: The terrible sportsmanship being shown here by Bockwinkel and Orndorff is unbelievable. These two took a great and hotly contested match and made it break down into a brawl that ended in a double count out.
Ken Resnick: Look at the disappointment of Adams and Taylor as they watch these two argue. The look of disgust on their face as they had a great match going and it was not finished properly.
Ken Resnick: Paul Orndroff has finished on top of the pile and is looking for a celebration with Terry Taylor but by the look on the face on Taylor he’s not interested in any sort of victory celebration with Orndorff.
Gordon Solie: Chris Adams seems to have had enough of Paul Orndorff’s celebration and just caught up flush in the chin with a Super Karate Kick! What a move! I don’t think I have seen anyone knocked out that fast since Ronnie Garvin’s Hands of Stone punch!
Chris Adams: Terry, it’s a real shame that such a tightly contested bout between the two of us had be ruined by these two getting into a melee and getting themselves counted out. We are both new here in the AWA and sides have been picked already long before we got here. It’s always nice to have somebody watching your back. The way you competed here tonight, I wouldn’t mind having a guy like you watching my back. What do you say we form a tag team? I’ll bet we can go straight to the top and capture those AWA Tag Team titles in no time.
Terry Taylor: Sounds like a plan Chris!
Ken Resnick: There you have it, we have a new tag team formed in Chris Adams and Terry Taylor. If I am the New Zealand Sheepherders, I would be watching out for this team! We’ll be right back after these messages from our commercial sponsors.
Ken Resnick: We are back here on AWA All-Star Wrestling as we go live now via satellite to Norman, Oklahoma to here from a new group that will be debuting here in the AWA very soon.
Steve Williams: I am here in the wrestling practice gym here at the University of Oklahoma. I have gathered these top collegiate standout wrestlers from the around the country to join me in creating the dominant pure wrestling group which will take the AWA by storm. Of course there’s myself, Steve “Dr. Death” Williams, myself an All-American athlete at the University of Oklahoma. Working out on the lifting the giant 18 wheeler tire right now for strength is Don Frye. Don is himself a former Division I wrestler at Arizona State University. Next working out on the weights is the giant of a man, Mark Coleman. Mark is a former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler from the Ohio State University. Last but not least is the Beast! Dan Severn, just like Mark Coleman, was a NCAA Division I wrestler at Arizona State University. I have brought this alliance together as we are now to be called the Varsity Club. We are about to take the AWA by storm. Watch out, because we will be snapping necks and cashing checks in the near future!
Ken Resnick: What an array of talent there Gordon, I am very interested to see those guys debut here in the AWA.
Gordon Solie: We are on to main event time as we have a tag match with the Four Horsemen taking on the Jim Cornette Experience.
Ken Resnick: Already in the ring, it will be the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair along with Barry Windham taking on the team of the men that we saw Cornette debut last week in Bam Bam Bigelow and the always unpredictable, Buzz Sawyer.
Gordon Solie: Flair is staring down his opposition tonight and I don’t think he likes what he sees. Bam Bam Bigelow was a top contender for titles all throughout Japan and with him coming into the AWA it could very well be a man like Bigelow that topples Flair for the AWA crown.
Ken Resnick: Flair digging into his bag of tricks as he got the attention of the big man diverted by something in the crowd and has taken the early advantage on Bigelow by raking the eyes and temporarily blinding the big man from Asbury Park, New Jersey.
Gordon Solie: Flair is wrenching on the neck of Bigelow as he continues to work over the head and neck area of Bam Bam. Something you usually don’t see out of Flair is working over a part of the body that is other than the knees and legs in setup for his Figure Four leg lock.
Gordon Solie: There was only so much that Bam Bam Bigelow was going to take before he snapped! Bam Bam picks Flair high above the air with little trouble at all and press slams him down hard to the mat.
Ken Resnick: Flair is trapped in the opponent corner and is begging for mercy here. Being in the wrong corner I think will get you little to no mercy at all.
Gordon Solie: Double team maneuver here by Sawyer and Bigelow as Flair finds himself on the wrong side of town in this match. Sawyer comes leaping off the middle rope and deliver a hard elbow to the head of Ric Flair. Bigelow and Sawyer are picking their spots on Flair and really weakening him up in anticipation for a victory in this match to get their campaign to dethrone Flair of the title headed in the right direction.
Ken Resnick: Buzz Sawyer is showing absolutely no remorse for the AWA World Champ here as he is posing for the cameras here that are flashing inside the Norfolk Scope as he drives a shin bone deep into the throat of Flair which sends Ric gasping for air as this is almost certainly a chokehold like hold.
Gordon Solie: Flair has gotten the stuffing beaten out of him by Sawyer and Bigelow. But Sawyer is openly letting Flair crawl to the corner to get the tag to Barry Windham as Sawyer is outright laughing at Flair as he struggles to get to the corner for the tag.
Ken Resnick: Here comes Barry Windham in and perhaps that was a mistake on Sawyer’s part letting the fresh man into the match so easily. Barry Windham is a house of fire as he connects with a big clothesline to Buzz Sawyer!
Gordon Solie: Buzz is rocking and a reeling in this match but is somehow able to stumble into the corner and here comes Bam Bam Bigelow into the fray. Windham is leaving off right where he did with Sawyer and is attacking Bigelow like crazy. He’s going to try for a body slam but…oh that was very ill advised as he couldn’t get the 400+ pound Bigelow off the mat. I think Windham’s back gave out on him and now he’s lying right in the center of the ring.
Ken Resnick: Bam Bam Bigelow is one of the most agile big men you will ever see in professional wrestling and he’s proving it as he comes crashing down off the top rope and onto the prone Barry Windham who has still not recovered from the body slam attempt on Bigelow just a few moments ago.
Gordon Solie: Earl Heber is down and yes, we have a three count! What an upset as in their debut match here in the AWA, Bam Bam Bigelow have defeated the team of Barry Windham and the AWA World Champion, Ric Flair!
Ken Resnick: The action is far from over just because the bell for the match has rung. The Jim Cornette Experience sees this as their opening and is taking the opportunity to attack the Four Horsemen when they are vulnerable! Jim Cornette just whacked Bobby Heenan straight across the face with his tennis racket!
Gordon Solie: Nikita Koloff just dumped Earl Hebner right over the top rope, that’s going to get him a fine or possibly a suspension from the office of AWA President Stanley Blackburn!
Ken Resnick: Sawyer has Flair in one of his finishing holds, the Mad Dog Stretch!
Gordon Solie: As if pinning him wasn’t enough, the 400+ pound frame of Bam Bam Bigelow comes crashing into Barry Windham in the corner.
Gordon Solie: Oh no, they are going to throw Ric Flair straight into Nikita’s Russian Sickle clothesline which will due extra damage with the added momentum from the whip in! Oh, Flair just took that one hard. Who’s going to save these guys? As far as I know, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard are not here tonight as they are wrestling up in Montreal.
Ken Resnick: Of all people, Dusty Rhodes and Lex Luger have burst on the scene and are swinging steel chairs at the Jim Cornette Experience members! They’ve cleared the ring and have saved Ric Flair from all most certain injury to the point that he may have had to vacate the title if repeated Russian Sickles were to occur. That move is so dangerous that there are very sketchy details out of the Soviet Union that Nikita Koloff instantaneously ended wrestler’s careers with just one blow from the Russian Sickle.
Gordon Solie: Rhodes and Luger have successfully cleared the ring and eliminated the threat. We are almost out of time here on AWA All-Star Wrestling as we hope to get some clarification here on why Dusty and Lex came into save the Horsemen when they are trying to pry the title away from Flair. Until next week, I am Gordon Solie along with Ken Resnick as we say good night from Norfolk, Virginia from all of us here at AWA All-Star Wrestling!
