Ken Resnick: Welcome everyone to a special edition of AWA All-Star Wrestling as we come to you from the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas for WF Figamania X. Tonight we have the AWA World heavyweight Championship on the line as the local Texas boy; Kevin Von Erich challenges the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
Gordon Solie: Kevin looks to be primed and ready for this giant opportunity for the title. He is being escorted to the ring with his brother, Kerry, in what surly has got to be the biggest opportunity of his career. He needs to make the most of it, as this may be his one and only shot he may ever get at the title.
Ken Resnick: Here is the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. He is coming down to ringside tonight with the business advisor of the Four Horsemen, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. It was just back at AWA When Worlds Collide that Ric Flair won the AWA World title but lost the NWA World title to Harley Race. But it was Flair getting the final word as Nikita Koloff collected the $10,000 bounty on Harley Race as he gave Race a piledriver through the announce desk.
Gordon Solie: Referee Jerry Calhoun has been assigned this contest as he raises up the AWA World title belt which will go to the winner of the match.
Ken Resnick: I do not think I have ever seen Kevin Von Erich, this intense, this ready. He knows that it all comes down to tonight, possibly his only chance at his childhood dream, the world title.
Gordon Solie: Flair seems to want no part of that intensity that Ken was just referring to. Flair is delaying this match from getting started as he ducks in between the ropes as Jerry Calhoun is forced to put the five count on Kevin so that he backs off from Flair.
Ken Resnick: Kevin has had enough of Flair’s stalling tactics as he goes right after the AWA World Champ! A strong knee into the bread basket of the champion ought to do the trick as he is attacking without mercy. He really wants that AWA World title belt and he really wants to do it in front of his home town fans here in Fort Worth.
Gordon Solie: Flair may already be in trouble here as Kevin is feeding off the energy of the home town crowd as he delivers a front piledriver variation to Flair. Flair still has to have a weak neck and back from those Harley Race piledrivers and perhaps Kevin has studied this and implemented it into his game plan to attack the champion at his weak spot!
Ken Resnick: Kevin is like a robot in there, programmed for absolute and total destruction of Ric Flair! Kevin is now attacking the legs of Ric Flair with a spinning toe hold.
Gordon Solie: Kevin I believe has come in with a very specific game plan to get the title from Flair. He’s already attacked the neck and back and now he’s attacking the knees, the same knees that are pivotal to Flair locking on his Figure Four finishing hold.
Ken Resnick: Looks like Ric Flair has had enough as he as escaped to the safe haven of the outside of the ring as he talks to the business advisor of the Four Horsemen, Bobby Heenan, out here on the floor of the Will Rogers Coliseum here in Fort Worth.
Gordon Solie: Ken, when you are standing next to a wrestling ring, there is no such thing as a “safe haven” as Kevin Von Erich after a running start to the opposite side of the ring is showing us that amateur track and field skill him and his brothers have as he high jumps the top rope and heads towards Flair and Heenan who I think are just now noticing where Kevin is.
Ken Resnick: Kevin is feeding off this crowd big time! Kevin with a high jump over the top rope has sent Flair and Heenan reeling. I have a feeling this may be Kevin’s night!
Gordon Solie: A smart move here by Kevin as he realizes the only way to win the championship is by pin or submission inside the ring, therefore he is trying to jump on this opportunity as fast as he can as he rolls Flair back inside the ring.
Ken Resnick: Here it is, he’s going to get it locked in, the famous Von Erich Iron Claw!
Gordon Solie: Not so fast Ken, looks like Flair may not be that vulnerable yet as he is able to get his hand up and is blocking Kevin’s attempt at the Iron Claw.
Ken Resnick: I really thought Kevin had it there…
Gordon Solie: Flair is able to shift the weight the other way and is able to get Kevin on his stomach and takes advantage with a rather rough boot to the back of the head of Kevin. You can never count Flair out until his shoulders are pinned to that mat for a three count.
Ken Resnick: Flair continuing his assault here as he has Kevin picked up for a big atomic drop. Flair is one of the most cunning veterans in professional wrestling today and he may have a trick or two up his sleeve to slip past Kevin in this match.
Gordon Solie: Uh oh, Kevin is in trouble now. Flair is softening up the right leg of Kevin and you know that means that he is setting up for one thing, the figure Four.
Ric Flair: Kerry, you see what I am doing to your brother?! You’re next! I’m going to snap the legs of every single Von Erich that’s stupid enough to get in the ring with me! You’re all going to pay.
Gordon Solie: Looks like Ric Flair is laying down a challenge to all of the Von Erich brothers. I’ll give Flair credit that he takes on all challengers and backs down from no one.
Ken Resnick: Flair may have spoken too soon here though as Kevin seems to be regaining his senses and is heading for a sneak attack on Flair.
Ken Resnick: A backslid pinning attempt by Kevin Von Erich, referee Jerry Calhoun is in position, this could be it!
Gordon Solie: Jerry Calhoun is down, count of one, count of two, count of thr….oh, so close. So close. I thought for sure that Kevin Von Erich was going to be crowned the new AWA World Heavyweight Champion tonight right here in front of his home town fans.
Ken Resnick: You have to give it to Kevin. He’s sticking to the game plan and not letting off the gas pedal one bit in his attempt to dethrone Flair was the AWA World Champion.
Gordon Solie: Kevin wants to give Flair a taste of his own medicine here with the Figure four. Wouldn’t it be something to see Flair lose the title at the hands of a move that he has made famous throughout the world of professional wrestling?
Ken Resnick: He’s got it! I can’t believe it, he’s got it locked in! Listen to Flair scream in pain as Kevin locks in the Figure Four tighter and tighter, Flair is in trouble here.
Gordon Solie: Flair seems to be fading here as Jerry Calhoun is right in front of the face of Ric Flair asking him if he’d like to give it up and relinquish the title but also checking to make sure that Flair’s shoulders aren’t down for a three count on the mat. This is going to be the night that Kevin Von Erich pulls the upset of the century and wins the title!
Ken Resnick: That’s, that’s, that’s the Fabulous Freebirds! Terry Gordy is attacking Kerry on the outside, meanwhile, Michael Hayes just hit Kevin square in the forehead with the steel chair while he had the Figure Four locked in on Flair! Jerry Calhoun is busy checking to see if Flair wants to give it up and isn’t seeing any of what’s going on with the Fabulous Freebirds on the outside!
Gordon Solie: And just like that, like a ghost in the night, the Fabulous Freebirds have disappeared as Jerry Calhoun is left to ponder why Kerry Von Erich is lying motionless on the floor of the Will Rogers Coliseum.
Ken Resnick: Meanwhile, Kevin, even though he is knocked out, still has the Figure four locked in on Flair. Flair is still in pain and agony but the hold can’t be having the full effect that it once did.
Gordon Solie: The hold is still locked in as Flair cannot get Kevin’s legs untangled from his, however, Kevin is knocked out and his shoulders are on the mat!
Ken Resnick: Referee Jerry Calhoun is down and he is checking on the shoulders of Kevin. Not this way, c’mon, please not this way, of all ways to lose a match. One, two, three. Jerry Calhoun has counted Kevin’s shoulders down to the mat even though Kevin still had the Figure Four locked in on Flair. If it wasn’t for the Fabulous Freebirds, I think we could have easily had a new AWA World Heavyweight Champion here tonight.
Ken Resnick: Kevin Von Erich has got to be absolutely heartbroken here tonight at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth. Not only did he let himself down, I think what may be more crushing to him is that he let his hometown fans down.
Gordon Solie: As Ric Flair celebrates with the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and Bobby Heenan that’s it for us here at the AWA as we send it back to the WF Figamania X Events Center as this great collection of professional wrestling from around the world continues on.
