Ken Resnick: Welcome everybody to this very exciting edition of AWA All-Star Wrestling! We have some very important announcements to make regarding the future of the American Wrestling Association. These announcements are very exciting and will definitely resukts in unprecedented growth of the AWA here in the very immediate future. I am joined here tonight joined in the AWA Board of Directors Conference Room with many of the most esteemed wrestling promoters from not only the United States but from across the world as we have three major announcements to tell you today! Let’s head up to the podium as AWA President Stanley Blackburn is about to address everyone.
Stanley Blackburn: Thank you everyone for attending today and thank you Ken Resnick for the great introduction. I am Stanley Blackburn, the president of the American Wrestling Association. Joined alongside me today, to my right, is the owner of the American Wrestling Association, Verne Gagne. To my left is the world famous wrestling promoter out of the New York area, Vincent K. McMahon. Our first big announcement for today is that after the result of the ladder match at AWA War Games for the AWA World Tag Team Championship which saw Buddy Rose and Doug Somers interfere in the match so that we had no clear winner, the AWA World Tag Team Championships are now vacant and the titles will be decided in the first annual AWA Hercules Cortez Memorial Tag Team tournament. The winners will receive the tag team belts sitting to my right as well as the beautiful trophy sitting to my left. In the coming weeks we will be determining the location for this great tournament. I can tell you now that we already have the location narrowed down to two finalists but I don't have the final details on that so I will have to get back to you in two weeks’ time to tell you where that tournament will be taking place.
Stanley Blackburn: The next big announcement is going to be that we have entered into a partnership with the NWA and will now be having the NWA World Heavyweight Championship now being defended on AWA wrestling shows. That is correct, Ric Flair himself will be defending the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in just to get a couple weeks time here in the AWA as we are still hammering out the details of this coming macth as well as future matches. To say a few words, here is the current NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair.
Ric Flair: Stanley Blackburn, wrestling promoters from around this great country as well as the world, I am indeed your NWA World Heavyweight Champion. I know that there are many, many, great competitors here in the AWA already as well as many top contenders from around the world that will be coming in shortly to challenege for both the NWA and AWA World Titles. But just as much as they want to win this NWA World Title, I too want to win a world title, the AWA World Title. I will defend this title against any man here in the AWA or around the world, you bring in any challenger from around the world and I will accept that challenge.
Ken Resnick: With our last big announcement a partnership has been formed with both the AWA as well as the National Wrestling Alliance and the World Wrestling Federation to bring you AWA events around the country and around the world. All events will still be run under the AWA banner but will be brought to you in the home arenas of many great arenas around the world. Joined with us here today for this historic announcement are such great promoters as “Cowboy” Bill Watts from UWF Wrestling, Paul Boesch from Houston and UWF announcer Jim Ross. We also have Bob Geigel from Kansas City, Gorilla Monsoon, announcer for the WWF, James Dudley from New York, Don Owen from Portland, Giant Baba from All-Japan and Jim Barnett from Georgia. AWA will be traveling around the country putting on the greatest wrestling events for you. And don’t forget as already mentioned by Stanley Blackburn that the first annual AWA Hercules Cortez Memorial Tag Team Tournament will also be taking place in all in just a couple weeks’ time. In two weeks we will be having the site selection here on AWA All-Star Wrestling as to who has been granted invitation to the tournament. We’ll be right back here on AWA All-Star Wrestling television.
Ken Resnick: We welcome everyone back here to our brand new AWA TV Studio which is now housed here in Atlanta at the WTBS Studios as we are under the auspices of Jim Barnett's Georgia Championship Wrestling as we will be working alongside Mr. Barnett in letting us use the studio here to film AWA All-Star Wrestling TV. Aso, we have a change here at the announcers table as well going forward as I am joined by the “Dean of Wrestling Commentators” Gordon Solie as Verne Gagne will be giving us announcers chair to focus more on the international expansion of the AWA as we just discussed.
Gordon Solie: Thank you Ken as many of you AWA viewers may know Verne Gagne has been a regular play-by-play announcer here along with Ken Resnick, an I’d like to personally Mr. Gagne for asking me to step in for him on a permanent basis here for the AWA. I will be joining the AWA announcing team but we will also be seeing some other announcers from around the country such as Jim Ross and Gorilla Monsoon joining the team here in the coming weeks and months to follow. But enough with the talk, let's get right to the ring as we have the new AWA United States Champion making his way to the ring.
Ken Resnick: At AWA War Games it was actually Andy Kaufman scoring the pin fall victory over the Junkyard Dog to win his own partner, Billy Graham's, AWA United States Championship. It didn’t come without controversy though as Mr. T joined Andy Kaufman’s Cabaret of Hollywood Stars and interefered on behalf of Kaufman. We haven't really heard what Graham thinks of Kaufman winning his championship but I guess we'll get some comments from the champion.
Andy Kaufman: Everybody I told you at AWA WAR Games that I had a trick up my sleeve. I always have a plan. Billy, I'm sorry I had to take the belt from you but you know that at least it's in the Andy Kaufman Cabaret of Hollywood Stars!
Billy Graham: It's okay, it's okay, Andy as long as one of us has it and we are making all that money that’s rolling in, doesn’t matter to me! I know that you are the greatest. I know that know one, even me could ever win that title from you!
Andy Kaufman: Speaking of ever beating me, I know that will never happen so you know what I'm doing right now? I am starting the Andy Kaufman Intergalactic Challenge. This is an open challenge to any man, woman, creature or beast to defeat me for this title. You’re all the scum of the earth and you will never beat me, but I’ll let you try to come and fight me for this championship. I now declare the Andy Kaufman Intergalactic Challenge open, who will be the first to challenge me?!
Gordon Solie: It looks like the challenge is being answered here by Steve Regal.
Andy Kaufman: Regal who says that you should get my title? I guess I'll just have to dispatch this one in record time and show everyone in the intergalactic world who the true number one is.
Ken Resnick: This match is underway and it looks as though Regal has given Andy Kaufman a free arm lock to start the match without an resistance.
Gordon Solie: Steve Regal seems to be kind of laughing at Kaufman as I really don’t understand how this guy can even be hurting Regal since he has no muscle on his very scrawny frame.
Gordon Solie: Kaufman may be showboating here just a little too soon as Steve Regal is easily able to escape that weak looking arm breaker that Andy Kaufman had applied.
Ken Resnick: The home audience has just got to be laughing out loud right now at the fighting ability that Andy Kaufman believes that he has.
Ken Resnick: Steve Regal is now inviting Kaufman to put a side head lock on him. You can tell that with the look on Kaufman’s face that he “thinks” he is in prime position here to win this match but I'm not really sure that that head lock is having much effect, if it al,l on Steve Regal.
Gordon Solie: Out of the headlock Steve Regal whips Kaufman into the ropes and delivers a giant boot right into the midsection of Andy Kaufman who is now doubled over in the corner!
Ken Resnick: Now, Andy Kaufman is trying to escape the ring here as Steve Regal has him by the feet and he is not letting Kaufman escape to the outside.
Gordon Solie: Regal better watch out for Billy Graham as he has folded up that chair and it looks like he may have some devious plans in his mind to help Kaufman retain the title.
Ken Resnick: And as Andy Kaufman begs at the feet of referee Jerry Calhoun, Billy Graham comes in and hits Steve Regal over the back of the head with that solid steel metal folding chair!
Gordon Soie: Referee Jerry Calhoun is down for the count and that’s a three count as Andy Kaufman retains the AWA United States Championship!
Ken Resnick: By any means necessary it looks as though Andy Kaufman is trying to keep that championship belt around his waist. Billy Graham looks to be Kaufman’s main problem solver and now it’ll be interesting to see now as the Andy Kaufman Intergalactic Challenge continues, who will be stepping up to face Andy Kaufman here in the coming weeks.
Gordon Solie: Welcome back here on AWA All-Star Wrestling television as we have the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Stan Hanson along with his partner Terry Funk in the ring. Let's go up to Hanson to hear what he has to say.
Stan Hanson: Last week at AWA War Games, I walked into the cage the champion and I walked out of the cage as the champion. Ric Flair thought I was ripe for the picking and thought he was facing a divided team. You thought that I could never coexist with Dusty Rhodes, Scott Hall and Dick Murdoch and you know what, you were right! I just used them, I used them to get in that cage to get my revenge on you Flair! I beat you and your boys and to top it all off, I pinned you right in the middle of the ring for the deciding fall! You all thought that I had no friends left after Terry Funk was gone after the Bar Room Brawl back at AWA Wrestle Rumble. But I have got the smarts, I have the strength and most importantly of all we have the stranglehold on this belt and you're not going to be getting it from me anytime soon!
Gordon Solie: Hold on just a second here folks as the Four Horsemen of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham and Harley Race have made their way into the ring and it looks like we could be in for a very interesting situation here!
Ric Flair: Hanson! You know it and I know it, at AWA War Games, I had you beat in the center of the ring. And if it wasn’t for the referee having his back turned and being distracted by Harley Race I’d be the AWA Champion right now. I'll admit you got one over on me but Stan you shouldn't expect that all the time. You see when you're dealing with the dirtiest player in the game, I always win. I may not of won that battle but I will come out winning the war. Hold on a second.
Ric Flair: Harley Race, at AWA War Games I had Stan Hanson pinned for the three count. I should be wearing the AWA World Heavyweight Championship right now. But somebody had to take the attention of the referee away while I had Hanson pinned and somebody is a little unhappy that they lost the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to me just a few months ago. Harley Race you’re the problem within the Four Horsemen. If there's a weak link in the Horseman and there can't be a weak link in the Horsemen, we take those weak links out of the chain!
Ken Resnick: It looks as though Harley Race is being kicked out of the Four Horsemen for basically costing Ric Flair the championship back at AWA War Games! Remember referee Marty Miller’s attention was turned to Race when he was trying to put a submission on himself to try and win the championship! Barry Windham and Arn Anderson are playing vigilante here as they are just beating Race down to the ground in the meantime. In the meantime, Flair is also sending a message to Stan Hanson and Terry Funk that the Four Horsemen shouldn’t be messed with and have strength in numbers.
Ric Flair: Consider that your pink slip Race! The Four Horsemen have trimmed the fat off the bone. You really cost me and especially the Four Horsemen as a whole a major opportunity. You are out of here Race, you're done for!
Ric Flair: Now where did I leave off, that that's right the AWA World Title shot against Stan Hanson. I have flexed my political muscle and called in a few favors to the AWA Board of Directors. So there’s no backing out of this one, the AWA has announced that two weeks after the AWA Hercules Cortez memorial Tag Team Tournament there will be a special TV episode of AWA All-Star Wrestling which will be called “Clash of the Champions” where all the AWA titles will be defended that night. And that's when I want to pounce on this title opportunity that I have been granted. But there’s more Hanson, Terry Funk is banned from ringside, but I’ll level the playing field as I have banned my Four Horsemen from ringside as well and it’ll be me and you one-on-one. If any of those men interfere in the match, it is a disqualification and the titles WILL change hands in this match with a disqualification. Furthermore, both the NWA and AWA titles will be on the line in a double titles match. The first ever AWA Clash of the Champions, we will have the AWA World Championship final showdown between “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and Stan Hanson! Folks, you won’t want to miss this one! Woooo!
Jim Ross: Everybody, I am Jim Ross one of the new announcers that you will be seeing here on AWA Wrestling. I am joined here in the ring by a team that made a major impact at AWA War Games and they weren’t even scheduled to be on the card! This is the team of “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers along with their valet “Sensational” Sherri Martel. Why exactly did you interfere in the ladder match back at AWA War Games?
Buddy Rose: You know Jim Ross we had been seeing Gagne, Hennig, the Road Warriors and all those other teams all fighting over those tag team titles for quite some time and we got fed up so we decided that the real champions of the world needed to come to the AWA to claim their rightful throne. Enter the “Playboy” and the “Pretty Boy” onto the scene.
Jim Ross: Now I don't know if you know this but you injured Greg Gagne to the point that he is out of action for quite some time after breaking his shoulder and cracking his elbow after that nasty fall off the ladder. You may have also put a target on your back as well you know with the vicious team of the Road Warriors will be after you after you cost them a golden opportunity at reclaiming the AWA World Tag Team Titles.
Doug Somers: Jim Ross, we are the best tag team in wrestling today, we have got the best valet in wrestling today, forgot about Paul Ellering we got Sherri Martel. We are going to be the tag team champions here very shortly.
Buddy Rose: That’s right Pretty Boy, and with that statement, I would like to state that we will be the first to announce that we are indeed the first team in the AWA Hercules Cortez Memorial Tag Team Tournament. The “Playboy” and the “Pretty Boy “ are about to show you why we are the best tag team in the wrestling world today when we walk out with the tournament with the tag team titles.
Jim Ross: Well here you go everyone we have the team of “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers along with his partner who tonight is weighing in at 271 pounds, “Playboy” Buddy Rose!
Buddy Rose: Hold on a second Ross, where did you get the note from? That weight isn’t right! It is 217 pounds! Get it right Ross!
Jim Ross: Their opponents for tonight will be the Fabulous Ones of Steve Keirn and Stan Lane.
ken Resnick: As you can see Buddy Rose is already showboating in the ring as he faces off with Steve Keirn to start the match.
Gordon Solie: I have known Buddy Rose for quite a few years and this is something that he does to get inside the heads of his opponents.
Ken Resnick: The Playboy is really putting the boots to Steve Keirn as referee Scrappy McGowan is trying to get in there and break up the beat down.
Gordon Solie: Rose and Summers have definitely put the field on notice by entering themselves into the big tag team tournament coming up in a few weeks. They definitely have to be favorites heading into that tournament I must say.
Gordon Solie: Buddy Rose showing off his power with a huge scoop suplex on Steve Keirn.
Ken Resnick: The Fabulous Ones already have been reeling early on in this match and this move definitely isn’t going to help out their cause.
Ken Resnick: A tag into Doug Somers as their tag team shows off their ability to work together to neutralize their opponents. Here comes Doug Somers flying off the top rope and he lands on the prone Steve Keirn. They can only be setting up for one thing as they seem to have this match firmly in hand.
Gordon Solie: Doug Somers with his opponent up on his shoulder as he delivers a huge atomic drop it's only a matter of time now before Rose and Somers finish this one off.
Ken Resnick: This is there finishing maneuver that they call the Ugly Face Killer. Doug Somers holds Stan Lane up on his shoulder as Buddy Rose bounces off the ropes for extra momentum and delivers a thunderous clothesline.
Gordon Solie: Scrappy McGowan down for the count and Buddy Rose gets the three count on Stan Lane as Rose and Somers have put all teams on notice heading into the big AWA Hercules Cortez Memorial Tag Team Tournament!
Ken Resnick: It is now time for our main event here on AWA All-star Wrestling as Arn Anderson of the Four Horsemen with Barry Windham in this corner will be taking on the debuting Jim Duggan. Jerry Calhoun is your referee for this 15 minute time limit match.
Gordon Solie: Before the bell rings and Jim Duggan is able to put his United States flag outside of the ring Arn Anderson attacks from behind and gains the early advantage in this match.
/Gordon Solie: Arn Anderson is just an absolute master in the ring when it comes to cutting the ring off and not letting his opponents have any room to breathe. You can see he is doing that here as he is smothering Jim Duggan and is laying in those big elbows. Arn Anderson is really softening up the All-American from Glen Falls, New York at this point.
Ken Resnick: Jim Duggan needs to pull out all the stops if he wants to get back into this match and that’s what he’s doing right now!
Gordon Solie: The Four Horsemen have been known to use illegal tactics like this as well, so Duggan decides to do the same as he pulls at the nose of Arn Anderson.
Ken Resnick: Listen to Anderson scream in pain as Jim Duggan is really putting it on Anderson!
Ken Resnick: Duggan is setting up for the big three point stance football tackles that he loves to use to finish opponents off. But not so fast as Barry Windham is holding Jim Duggan leg in the corner while Jerry Calhoun is checking on Arn Anderson.
Ken Resnick: Arn Anderson uses the distraction to his advantage and rocks Jim Duggan right on top of his head with a big pile driver!
Gordon Solie: Jerry Calhoun is down for the count and that will be all as Arn Anderson hooks the leg and gets the three count on Jim Duggan. A little bit of underhanded tactics but in the end he will get the win in the record books. Ric Flair has jumped in the ring, let’s hear what he has to say as we have just a few minutes of TV time remaining.
Ric Flair: Woooo! Next week make sure you tune into AWA All-Star Wrestling because I will be announcing the newest member of the Four Horsemen to take over the spot and that the little weak Harley Race has vacated. You're gone Race and the new man in the Four Horsemen will be my partner in the AWA Hercules Cortez Memorial Tag Team Tournament so make sure you tune in next week to see who are newest find is! Woooo! Good night everybody!
